Karst landscapes consist of carbonate rocks that undergo physical alteration due to #weathering and the formation of #carbonicacid. These changes can occur at the surface but can also lead to the formation of cave systems.
Karst caves are the most common type of underground cavity worldwide. The process by which limestone, gypsum, or dolomite is hollowed out follows this principle: rainwater absorbs CO₂ from the soil or the air, creating carbonic acid-rich #seepagewater. This water penetrates deep into the rock's fissures and crevices. Over millennia, the calcium carbonate is leached away by this mildly acidic aqueous environment, gradually giving rise to increasingly large and complex #cavesystems.
Caves in general, and karst caves in particular, given their prevalence, constitute #complexhabitats inhabited by a wide variety of microorganisms and animals with specialized #ecologicaladaptations. Such adaptations are necessary because these environments are consistently cool and humid, as well as largely devoid of sunlight; consequently, animals must rely heavily on tactile and olfactory senses rather than visual ones.
However, conditions in karst caves are quite #hostile to plants that depend on photosynthesis. Nevertheless, the ecological conditions do allow #specializedplants to find suitable habitats, particularly in the entrance areas of the caves.
Karst caves and landscapes in the #Guangxi #Zhuang Autonomous Region of southern China are renowned worldwide for their extensive cave systems, deep collapse dolines (tiankengs), and cone and tower karst formations, features that often serve as popular tourist attractions. A well-known example in Guangxi is the Reed Flute Cave in Guilin, distinguished by its spectacular lighting. Naturally, these complex cave ecosystems also harbor numerous organisms adapted to their unique conditions. Thanks to large cave openings, or, in the case of collapse dolines, other sources of sunlight, different plant species have also adapted to this environment. Because individual cave ecosystems offer highly specific living conditions found nowhere else in the surrounding area, they can also host #endemicplant #species with a particularly restricted distribution range.
Authors S.-Y. Qin et al. (2026) scientifically investigated and described a new species exemplifying this phenomenon: Primulina #campanuloides, a plant belonging to the Gesneriaceae family (related to #Africanviolets). This highly specialized species grows exclusively in a single, isolated cave in Mashan County, Guangxi. The only known #population to date is very small, comprising approximately 800 individuals; it inhabits the permanently shaded, humid entrance area of the karst cave. Regarding #pollinationecology, the authors note that the plant is highly specialized for specific pollinator groups. Its #protrudingpistil is thought to attract insects from the cave's dim environment. Due to its limited #distributionrange, the researchers have provisionally classified their species as #vulnerable (VU D1+2) according to current IUCN criteria.
