Prairie powerhouse on paws 🦡🌾
American Badgers roam our grasslands, digging burrows that control rodents, aerate soil, and create homes for other wildlife 🕳️🐿️🦉. Keep patches wild and drive slow on rural roads to give badgers a break 💚

Animal of the Week - Eurycantha calcarata—the New Guinea Giant Spiny Stick Insect. If you think all phasmids are fragile little leaves, think again. These insects are the heavy-duty, bark-mimicking, defensive tanks of the arthropod world

Tiny “cheetahs” of the prairie 🐞⚡ Tiger beetles sprint across sandy trails in the Souris River Watershed, hunting flies and ants and helping keep pests in check 🌾. Keep patches wild and skip pesticides to protect these mini predators 🌿🧡 #AnimalOfTheWeek

Don’t be the last animal to the party
Our wildlife cam is live. We’ll share more furry & feathered Casa Tilo guests in the coming months.
Who’ll steal the spotlight: deer, boars, pine martens… or an unexpected visitor?

Our #AnimalofTheWeek is the web-footed Palmato gecko, found in Namibia and Richtersveld in South Africa. The Palmato gecko stays hydrated by licking the moisture from its translucent skin and lidless eyes. It has skin pigment cells filled with guanine crystals that produce a neon-green, iridescent fluorescence around their eyes and flanks.

African Penguins are endemic to Southern Africa, where they can be found from South Africa to Namibia. They breed on 24 islands between Hollamsbird Island, Namibia and Bird Island in Algoa Bay, South Africa. #AnimalofTheWeek

All 3 orangutan species are critically endangered, driven to the brink by deforestation & poaching. There is no difference between an innocent person in jail & an orangutan in a cage.
Avoid palm oil. Boycott barren enclosures.

Animal of the Week: Polecats
Once hunted to near extinction in the UK, they survived only in rural Wales until the 50s. Now they're making a comeback; we recently spotted one on a night drive in Norfolk! Keep a look out!

Animal of the Week: The Raccoon
They are intelligent and highly adaptable mammals with incredibly dexterous paws & curious personalities. Despite the nickname “Trash Panda”, they are skilled wild foragers and devoted parents!

Our #AnimalofTheWeek is the Baleen whale. These whales are known as the gentle giants of the oceans, and include the largest known creatures ever to have lived, the blue whales, up to 33m long. They lack teeth, having instead a series of baleen plates (or whalebones) that hang from the upper jaw on either side of the palate. The baleen is a horny, flexible material ending in a fringe of hairs used to strain plankton from water when it is expelled from the mouth. Baleen whales have overcome the problems of small size prey by filtering vast volumes of water.

Animal of the Week: The Wallaby. Often overshadowed by kangaroos, they're adapted for thick forests or rocky terrain, favouring balance and precision over long leaps. Did you know there are over 30 species of Wallaby?

Animal of the week: Whale sharks are the largest fish on Earth. They feed on plankton & travel vast distances over their 130-year lifespans. Critically endangered, yet 15-20 remain captive in the USA, China & Japan.

Our #AnimalofTheWeek is the Sharptooth catfish (Clarias gariepinus). This catfish is the most widely distributed fish in Africa, largely due to its ability to tolerate a wide variety of habitats, as well as all over the world due to its introduction as an aquaculture species. Its head is broad and flat, ending in a strong, bony shield that helps it dig into the substrate and protects it in murky water.

Animal of the week: The Beluga Whale! ~30 Belugas are trapped at Marineland in Canada. Without funding or relocation, the park is threatening euthanasia. Since 2019, 20 whales have died there. It's time for them to be free.

Animal of the Week: The Impala! Graceful, common & often overlooked. They are vital to Africa’s ecosystem because they are, unfortunately, the ultimate prey item... even large baboons, eagles & pythons will take them!

Our #AnimalofTheWeek is the bat-eared fox (Otocyon megalotis). It feeds on mice, insects and wild fruit. The bat-eared fox has developed a remarkable skill in doubling back on its tracks. Unfortunately this habit has made it easy for it to be caught and killed by dogs and other predators. They are nocturnal in habit and usually move around in pairs or in small families. They use burrows for breeding, especially those deserted by the aardvark.

Animal of the Week: Orca. Wikie & Keijo remain stuck in Marineland. Relocation plans to Spain, Japan & Nova Scotia blocked. Investigating this week. Help us act for them & all captive wildlife: https://t.co/zIA8TYjpwn

Animal of the Week: The Tapir! Looks like a pig-elephant, swims like a hippo and they've been around for 5 million years! Luckily, they don't suffer in captivity, but so many other do. Help us stop it: https://t.co/zIA8TYjpwn
