💬 "I felt like I was dying." What started as a day at the zoo with her daughter ended in a stay at #BaptistJax for Christina five years ago.
She brushed off feeling tired and strange that day, but by evening, she was experiencing fever, vomiting and intense pain. Despite showing signs of a serious infection, Christina was sent home from other emergency departments without answers.
Finally, her husband brought her to Baptist & Wolfson North ER, where Christina became unresponsive. A spinal tap revealed she had bacterial meningitis, a life-threatening infection that causes swelling around the brain and spinal cord. She was quickly transported to Baptist Jacksonville, where she received immediate treatment and spent three weeks recovering.
Christina shared: "I have so much gratitude to Baptist Health. They saved my life. I am certain I would either be dead or severely handicapped if I had waited any longer to be treated."
Christina's experience is a powerful reminder that serious infections can progress quickly. Sepsis is the body's extreme response to an infection and can lead to tissue damage, organ failure and death if not treated quickly. Knowing the warning signs and seeking medical care when something doesn't feel right can make all the difference.

At Baptist Health, our emergency team is committed to recognizing sepsis and delivering lifesaving care when time is of the essence.
Today, team members from #BaptistJax, @WolfsonChildren and @Nemours came together for a special remembrance event in memory of the 25th anniversary of September 11, honoring the nearly 3,000 lives lost, the families forever changed and the first responders who ran toward danger. 💙
We remember the uncertainty, the heartbreak and the way our nation came together in the days that followed. But we also remember September 12 - the day we woke up to a changed world and asked, "What do we do now?"
People showed up for one another. Neighbors checked on neighbors. Strangers offered comfort. Communities came together to serve, volunteer and help where they could. 🏡 🫶
That spirit of compassion and service continues to live on, including in health care. Every day, health care teams meet people in some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Beyond medicine and technology, it's compassion, kindness and simply being there that can remind someone they are not alone.

Inspiration was easy to find at the graduation of our Tipping the Scale students at #BaptistJax last week! 🎓
For over 25 years, Tipping the Scale has connected local high school students with Baptist Health mentors, opening doors through career exploration, job-readiness training and paid internship opportunities. Over the past eight weeks, this year's Baptist Jacksonville interns gained hands-on experience while building skills, confidence and lasting connections.
Watching this year's students cross the stage was a proud reminder of what mentorship can accomplish. We can't wait to see where their journeys lead next — whether that's in health care or wherever their dreams take them. 💙

⚾ 🏆 Tonight's MVP? Gregory Burton, former @DuvalSchools police chief, who took the mound to throw out the first pitch at the @JaxShrimp's Strike Out Stroke game.
After facing one of life’s toughest opponents - a stroke - Greg began his recovery journey at #BaptistJax under the expert care of neurointerventionalist Dr. Nima Amin Aghaebrahim and our dedicated stroke and rehab teams.
Greg was also presented with a special handcrafted “Stroke Champion” trophy designed and 3D-printed by Dr. Nima — a tribute to the determination, perseverance and hard work that have defined his recovery journey.
Today, Greg is back to playing golf, working out, running and enjoying life. Alongside his wife, Lakesha, he has become a passionate advocate for stroke and aphasia awareness, helping others understand the lasting impact stroke can have and the importance of seeking care quickly. While Greg has recovered physically, writing remains his primary form of communication as he continues therapy.
Greg was joined on the field by Lakesha, Dr. Nima and Wendy Camp, Baptist Health’s stroke program director, celebrating not only his recovery but the coordinated team approach that helps stroke patients receive life-saving care when every second counts.
Baptist Health’s stroke team was also at the game raising awareness about stroke prevention and warning signs, including sharing stroke risk assessment cards with fans.
His appearance on the mound was more than a ceremonial first pitch — it was a powerful reminder of resilience, recovery and the importance of recognizing stroke symptoms quickly. Every second matters when it comes to stroke care.

We’re #BaptistProud to support @UnitedWayNEFL and all they do on behalf of our community, so teams from #BaptistJax and @WolfsonChildren took to the streets of San Marco to clean areas outside of our hospital. Their scrubs were replaced with gloves and trash bags, and they really made our downtown campuses shine! 🚮💙

One year ago, Baby Brodie made his debut at #BaptistJax. This past week, he celebrated his “First Rodeo” — and we couldn’t help but smile seeing how much he’s grown. 💙

It takes a village to oversee these efforts, and Jeannie does so with a level of grace and skill that makes it look effortless. “When the Baptist Auxiliary was placed under the direction of Jeannie, we all wondered how things would change, how we would be under her direction and how we would all be treated. Jeannie has taken our group “under her wing” and moved right along without a problem. She directs us in our day-to-day operations and greets each one of us with a big smile - her little laugh that is so welcoming as we come in for our service day, always making us glad that we came in to volunteer. She presents new services needed by the hospital and leads as we move forward with them. Jeannie makes each volunteer feel valued and appreciated. What a pleasure it is to work with her as we strive together to express God’s love to all.”

🚧 BREAKING GROUND: Today we celebrated the start of construction on our new four-story emergency and patient tower at #BaptistJax and Wolfson Children's Hospital! This marks a major step forward in expanding and enhancing access to advanced care for adults and children in Northeast Florida when they need it most.
More patients receive emergency care at Baptist Health’s main campus than at any other hospital in the Jacksonville area. This new tower will significantly enhance the health system’s capacity to provide the highest level of care for a wide range of health needs, including chest pain, stroke, behavioral health crises, complex illnesses or injuries, pediatric trauma and more.
Named in honor of community philanthropists Debbie and Sutton McGehee Jr., whose transformative gift helped make the project possible, the 123,000-square-foot McGehee Family Tower will feature:
- Two separate emergency centers—one for adults and one designed to meet the special needs of children—waiting areas and 100 emergency patient rooms: 63 for adults and 37 for children, including three pediatric trauma rooms on the first floor;
- Dedicated imaging, laboratory and ancillary resources to support emergency and trauma services;
- A new endoscopy suite, shell space for new cardiac procedure rooms plus expanded areas for pre- and post-operative heart procedures on the second floor;
- Plans for a future expansion that will add 68 inpatient rooms on the third and fourth floors; and
- An upgraded emergency entrance designed for a streamlined arrival experience, with a prominent patient drop-off zone offering patients and their loved ones quick and easy access to care.
Designed with patients and their families in mind, the tower will elevate the patient experience by combining comfort and clinical efficiency in a care environment rooted in compassion.
“We wanted to make a lasting gift for our community that we have called home for generations,” said Debbie and Sutton McGehee. “We raised our kids here and our grandchildren are growing up here. Supporting this new patient and ER tower helps to make sure that Baptist Health and Wolfson Children’s Hospital can continue to care for current and future generations of families in the Jacksonville area.”
