October 13 is Bean Day. Behind its date lies the old lunar-calendar custom of moon viewing. It is an observance rooted in a distinctly Japanese sense of the seasons, linking the moon in the night sky to beans on the table. The number 13 is also deeply tied to the phases of the moon.
It was established by the #AllJapanPulsePromotionAssociation, a general incorporated association with its office in #AkasakaMinato, Tokyo. In 2010 (Heisei 22), it was certified and registered by the Japan Anniversary Association. In Japan there was a custom called #Mamemeigetsu (the "bean moon"): on the night of the thirteenth of the ninth lunar month, known as #Juusanya, people offered beans to the harvest moon and ate boiled beans. But if the date followed the old calendar exactly, it would shift widely each year. So October 13 in the modern calendar was chosen as the date.
There are two moon-viewing nights. One is #Jugoya, on the fifteenth of the eighth lunar month, and the other is Juusanya on the thirteenth of the ninth. Today the offering for moon viewing is usually moon-viewing dumplings, but in the past it was customary to offer crops harvested around that time: taro for Jugoya and beans for Juusanya. That is why Jugoya is also called #Imomeigetsu (the "taro moon") and Juusanya Mamemeigetsu. The image of people offering the harvest's bounty to the moon remains right in the names.
Beans are a collective term for the seeds of legumes used especially for food and processing, such as soybeans, kidney beans, chickpeas, adzuki beans, and peanuts. In human agricultural civilization, they have been a staple crop for a long time, just like grains. Of the edible beans grown in more than 100 countries today, the kidney bean has the largest production. Specimens from around 4000 BC have been found in #Mexico, and #Mesoamerica is thought to be its origin. The association has organized the #MameNoHiPromotionCouncil and continues to encourage people to bring nutritious beans into their lives through cooking classes and events.
Today, why not add a side dish of beans to dinner? Stewed beans, bean soup, or simply boiled beans with a pinch of salt are all enough. If the moon is visible outside your window, savor them while imagining the old bean moon, and ordinary beans become a little special. Next, let's talk about the health of our closest family members.
