Today marks 16 years since Canada ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). This December will also mark the 20th anniversary of the Convention’s adoption by the United Nations. The CRPD was created to ensure the full and equal enjoyment of human rights by people with disabilities and to promote respect for their inherent dignity. These milestones offer an important opportunity to pause and ask: Are we living up to the commitments we made? When the Convention was adopted, it marked a turning point — a shared global commitment to dignity, equality and belonging for people with disabilities. It affirmed that people with disabilities are rights-holders and active participants in society. But commitments on paper are not enough. Governments must demonstrate the leadership, accountability and action required to translate the Convention’s principles into real change in people’s lives. As we reflect on the past 16 years since Canada’s ratification, we recognize that progress has been made. But significant barriers remain. Inclusion Canada will continue to work to ensure that Canada fully implements the CRPD and delivers on equality and inclusion. The journey toward full inclusion is far from over. Canada made a legally binding commitment when it ratified the CRPD. Realizing that commitment requires sustained leadership, accountability and action. That accountability must start by repealing Track 2 Medical Assistance in Dying, implementing a coordinated deinstitutionalization strategy, ensuring consistent policies on inclusive education, and addressing the disproportionate poverty of people with disabilities. #CRPD
