Something was different last night. This wasn’t an unexpected boat suddenly appearing on a beach or a boat being intercepted and it’s illegal occupants
being brought ashore at the usual port.
There was a substantial pre-planned operational response before the people came ashore.
The Portsmouth route also demonstrates that a small boat doesn’t have to use the traditional Dover Strait route at all. Once smugglers launch considerably further west in Normandy, the possible UK landing area expands enormously — potentially also covering Dorset, Devon and Cornwall.
