Pacific Subsurface Heat ― May 2026 This is why the world is in 4°C El Niño territory. Something potentially massive is forming beneath the Pacific ocean. This is NOT just surface warming. The 3D diagnostic analysis based on ARMOR3D data shows a huge subsurface heat reservoir with anomalies reaching +6°C below the ocean surface. If powerful WWB (Westerly Wind Burst) events intensify and push that heat upward, the surface response could theoretically explode toward +3°C to +4°C. The 20°C isotherm displacement is the tell. In that 3D cross-section, the solid white line (actual) sits far below the dashed line (1991–2020 climatology) across most of the basin. That isn’t surface noise — it’s the thermocline being physically shoved downward by accumulated Kelvin wave pulses. The heat isn’t at the surface yet because it hasn’t been upwelled. It’s loaded beneath it. The mechanism is not exotic. This is standard ENSO dynamics operating at unusually high amplitude. WWB → downwelling Kelvin wave → thermocline depression → eastern Pacific warm water volume expansion → eventual upwelling when Bjerknes feedback kicks in. What’s unusual is the magnitude of the subsurface anomaly and how far east the +4 to +6°C anomaly region extends. “Super El Niño” alone undersells what makes this potentially different. The pre-event background SST is already elevated by secular warming, so the El Niño signal is stacking on a warmer baseline than 1997 or 2015 had. A Niño3.4 anomaly of even +2.5°C in 2026 climate conditions has larger absolute SST than a +2.5°C anomaly did in 1998. The critical watch item is MJO phase. If the Madden-Julian Oscillation propagates into a WWB-favorable phase over the next 6–8 weeks and generates another Kelvin wave pulse, that’s the accelerant. The next two TAO/TRITON buoy updates and the June ENSO diagnostic discussion from CPC will be worth watching closely.
