My Review of Royal Blood and Mafia Knight Season 2: Caleb's Royal Status, Andrew's Obsession, and the issues Behind the Crown
This review will primarily focus on Caleb's royal status, what we have learned throughout Season 2, and my personal interpretation of the events. I will also discuss the controversial inc***st-related implications of Andrew's feelings towards Caleb(romantically and not platonically), and how I believe this storyline could have been explored with greater depth and sensitivity. @emouniverse26
I know some people might say that we should simply move on or question why viewers are still concerned about whether Caleb is genuinely of royal blood. I read some posts that they feel sad about it, Caleb not being a Prince anymore. And it shouldn't be done that way.
However, I believe there are still unanswered questions worth discussing, and I hope this analysis will help explain why I find Caleb's situation particularly interesting.
I recently rewatched Royal Blood and Mafia Knight Season 2 I don't know how many times. Before putting together this lengthy review, I also wanted to make sure I was emotionally and mentally prepared. Season 2 was an absolute roller coaster of emotions, to say the least. If I ever missed something out, everyone is free to point it out through comments below.
Honestly, I have always been fascinated by royal bloodlines, scandals, succession disputes, monarchy, and history. Naturally, this storyline gave me plenty to think about.
1. Caleb's Royal Status: What Do We Really Know?
As we know, in Episode 20, Caleb reveals one of his biggest secrets to Arian: he supposedly is not the King's biological son.
According to Caleb, his mother was the King's second wife. Before marrying the King, she was supposedly in love with a commoner and was already pregnant with Caleb.
The King, who was deeply infatuated with her, allegedly threatened that something would happen to her unborn child if she refused to marry him.
That is the version of events we were given through Caleb.
However, as the episodes progressed, we were also shown more glimpses of Caleb and Andrew's childhood. This is where things became increasingly interesting to me.
One of the strongest underlying themes of the story is manipulation, ambition, and obsession. Why? because Andrew is obsessed in terminating Caleb in season 1, but when he learned Caleb has a thing for men. He actually said "The Game of Love" line.
Andrew, who was once a seemingly calm and caring older brother towards Caleb, eventually became someone entirely different. His transformation appears to have been heavily influenced by the King's ambitions and, more importantly, his own mother's constant reminders that Caleb could become his competition for the throne.
But here is something I cannot stop questioning:
Why was Andrew's mother so threatened by Caleb in the first place, especially if she believed he was not the King's biological son?
Something about that does not sit right with me.
I have a few theories.
A. Caleb's Mother Could Have Come From a Noble Family
What if Caleb's mother was not simply a commoner? Perhaps she belonged to a noble family, making her position within the Royal Family much more complicated than what we were initially told.
Alternatively, what if Caleb was actually King George's biological son, and the story about his mother's previous relationship with a commoner was deliberately used to conceal the truth?
If that were the case, Andrew's mother would have had a legitimate reason to view Caleb as a potential threat to her son's succession.
After all, a younger son of the King could still become a serious contender for the throne, depending on the monarchy's succession laws and the circumstances surrounding his birth.
B. If Caleb's Mother Was Also a Commoner, Why Was Caleb Still a Threat to Andrew's Claim to the Throne?
Now, this is another possibility that I find particularly interesting.
What if Caleb's mother really was a commoner, just as we were led to believe, but Caleb himself was still King George's biological son?
Perhaps Caleb was the result of the King's relationship with the woman he genuinely loved, while his marriage to Andrew's mother was primarily an arranged marriage based on royal or political interests.
In that scenario, Caleb's birth could have been considered a royal scandal, particularly if King George's relationship with his mother happened outside the boundaries of his marriage. And that is why he(might possibly) fought for Caleb's Mom to marry as second wife, and perhaps did some agreement with the First Wife(Andrews Mom).
Think about it. I read on some comments on another posts that Caleb was put in line of the succession to avoid public questions. That might be the case, but The Crown has plenty of scandals to cover.
What if Andrew's mother knew that Caleb was King George's biological son all along? Even if Caleb's mother had no noble background, his biological connection to the King could still make him a potential threat to Andrew's position in the line of succession.
And perhaps that is precisely why a different story was necessary.
The simplest way to conceal the circumstances surrounding Caleb's birth would be to establish a narrative that his biological father was also a commoner.
This would make it appear that Caleb was not the King's biological child and that his presence in the Royal Family was merely the consequence of King George's affection for his mother.
But what if that was never the complete truth?
Perhaps the story Caleb was told was deliberately constructed to protect the monarchy, conceal the King's past relationship, and prevent further complications surrounding Andrew's succession.
Of course, this is only my interpretation, and the series has not confirmed any of these possibilities.
Nevertheless, I find this theory particularly compelling because it offers another explanation for Andrew's mother's apparent anxiety about Caleb.
Whether Caleb's mother was a noblewoman or a commoner, the more important question might actually be whether Caleb was King George's biological son all along(in secret).
And if he was, then Andrew's mother's fear of losing her son's position as the future King would make considerably more sense.
2. The first wife's influence and authority.
Historically, the position of a queen consort could carry considerable political and social influence within the royal household.
Royal marriages were often connected to political alliances, legitimacy, and succession. A queen consort could therefore have strong personal and political reasons to protect her children's position.
However, being the King's first wife does not automatically mean that her children have an unquestionable claim to the throne. Succession depends on the monarchy's laws, legitimacy rules, and the circumstances surrounding each claimant.
This historical distinction is important when examining Andrew's mother's behavior.
3. King George might not have been entirely in control.
What if there were political pressures, personal arrangements, or other circumstances that prevented King George from openly addressing Caleb's parentage?
We also have to consider the possibility that the King was concealing something from the rest of the Royal Family.
Perhaps there were secrets and political complications that the series has not yet revealed.
For me, the King's decisions are another part of this mystery that deserves further exploration. I know some of you might say he sold Caleb to Arian in Season 1. But also take note he first asked Arian who did he like to Marry from his Daughter's as well.
Andrew: A Childhood Shaped by Manipulation
This brings me to Andrew.
I agree with @Kookycatt , and I genuinely feel sad about the possibility of Caleb being reduced to someone who is supposedly not of royal blood, especially considering everything we have witnessed throughout the story. And hurray for Queen Matilda!
I also understand that @emouniverse26 appears to be avoiding directly exploring the inc***st-related implications of Andrew's feelings towards Caleb.
Having read about royal history, including instances of inc***st within royal dynasties, I believe the psychological aspects of this storyline could have been explored more meaningfully.
Rather than avoiding the subject entirely, the story could have examined Andrew's psychological deterioration, his distorted attachment to Caleb, and the consequences of growing up in an environment where power, succession, and obsession were constantly reinforced.
This is not an attempt to excuse Andrew's actions. He is still responsible for the choices he makes.
However, understanding how he became this way would have made his character development much more compelling.
Look at what we were shown in the childhood flashbacks.
Andrew was once a child who genuinely cared for Caleb. He was someone Caleb looked up to, someone who comforted him, and someone who made him feel safe.
So, what happened?
His mother repeatedly instilled in him the idea that Caleb was an obstacle to his future as King.
Imagine growing up with that kind of conditioning.
A child can be manipulated and psychologically influenced over time. When the person responsible is your own mother, someone you are supposed to trust, the impact can be even more profound.
Andrew was essentially being conditioned to become the perfect heir.
But at what cost?
The Childhood Flashbacks: What They Tell Us About Caleb and Andrew
Episode 28 – The Snacks and Their Childhood Bond
When Caleb returned for his sister's wedding, Andrew mentioned the snacks he used to stack for him.
We were then given another glimpse into their childhood.
During those younger years, Caleb genuinely saw Andrew as a kind and caring older brother. Andrew would cheer him up with something as simple as snacks.
It was such a small gesture, but it carried considerable emotional significance.
This is what makes their relationship so heartbreaking.
Caleb remembered Andrew as someone who once made him feel loved and protected. He had no reason to believe that the same person would eventually become one of the biggest sources of his suffering.
Their childhood connection makes Andrew's transformation even more tragic.
We are not looking at two people who were always enemies. We are looking at a relationship that was gradually poisoned by ambition, manipulation, and the crown.
Episode 38 – Arian's Observation
In Episode 38, Arian points out to Caleb that Andrew is in love with him, but not in the way a brother should love another brother.
Once again, we are shown a flashback of their younger years.
What caught my attention was Andrew's mother in the background. Whispering to him.
Think about that for a moment.
Andrew was still a child. Instead of allowing him to develop a healthy relationship with his younger brother, his mother constantly reinforced the idea that Caleb was someone he needed to compete against.
Now, here is another theory I cannot completely dismiss:
What if Caleb's real identity was deliberately concealed from him?
What if Caleb was actually of royal blood, but Andrew's mother manipulated the circumstances and allowed him to believe that he was merely the son of a commoner who had been accepted into the Royal Family because of the King's affection for his mother?
Perhaps this narrative was created to protect the family's reputation, conceal a scandal, or prevent Caleb from becoming a legitimate threat to Andrew's succession.
Of course, this is only speculation. The series has not confirmed any of it.
Andrew grew up believing that everything revolved around the Crown and that losing control meant losing everything.
Eventually, he began acting as though he could get away with anything.
Episode 43: Caleb's Suffering Inside the Palace
Episode 43 was another important moment for me.
Caleb finally tells Andrew about the torment he experienced inside the palace: the humiliation, the emotional suffering, and everything he had endured.
What makes this particularly heartbreaking is that Caleb had once hoped Andrew would protect him. And Andrew had a choice.
My Response to @Lilliane42 her posts appeared on my wall but I responded to it, I remember.
Who actually told Caleb this story?
Did his mother tell him directly? Was it someone else inside the palace? Or was this simply the version of events he had been led to believe?
In other words, Caleb might have been made to believe that he never truly belonged to the Royal Family.
And honestly, this kind of political competition, manipulation, and concealment is not unfamiliar when studying royal history.
Another detail worth considering is Caleb's physical resemblance to his sisters and even Andrew himself, apart from his blonde hair.
Of course, physical resemblance is not proof of biological parentage. Nevertheless, it is an interesting detail to consider when discussing the possibility of another plot twist.
I remember how, in real life, Prince Harry has red hair while Prince William is blonde, despite sharing the same parents.
Genetics can be quite fascinating! XD
Episode 48 – Andrew's Psychological Deterioration
Episode 48 showed just how far Andrew's mind had deteriorated.
After Arian confronted him and made it clear that his actions had been exposed, Father Francis also provided a statement about what Andrew had done.
Despite everything being revealed, Andrew still threatened to kill Caleb.
However, what stood out to me was that, despite his threats, Andrew ultimately could not bring himself to hurt Caleb.
Instead, he chose the course of action we eventually witnessed.
This moment was significant because it showed the extent of Andrew's internal conflict. His obsession, desperation, and deteriorating mental state had brought him to a point where even he seemed unable to reconcile his feelings and actions.
Episodes 50–51 – Caleb's Abdication
I was not particularly surprised that Caleb decided to abdicate the throne. Honestly, I had already anticipated this development.
It makes sense from the perspective of his personal happiness. Caleb wants to be with Arian, and stepping away from the responsibilities of the Crown allows him to pursue that life.
Furthermore, I believe Matilda deserves the opportunity to become Queen Regnant of the British throne.
However, I cannot help feeling sad about one particular aspect of Caleb's decision.
Caleb seems to believe that his position in the line of succession was merely the result of a scandal.
That is what makes this development bittersweet for me.
He has spent so much of his life questioning whether he truly belongs to the Royal Family. Now, he is finally stepping away from the Crown, but I wonder whether he is doing so with a complete understanding of his own identity and worth.
There is also an important distinction I want to make regarding royal titles.
Abdicating the throne, relinquishing an HRH style, and giving up a princely title are three different things.
Abdication: This refers to formally giving up the throne or one's position as sovereign. In Caleb's case, he is relinquishing his position as a potential future monarch rather than abdicating an existing reign.
HRH style: HRH stands for His Royal Highness. It is a form of royal address and does not automatically disappear simply because someone steps away from active royal duties. Its removal or restoration depends on the applicable royal arrangements.
Prince title: The title of Prince is separate from the HRH style. Someone can retain a princely title without using HRH, depending on the rules governing that particular monarchy.
Therefore, I understand why Caleb might no longer wish to use his HRH style, especially if he wants to live privately with Arian and distance himself from royal responsibilities.
However, I do not necessarily think he should lose his title as Prince Caleb.
And that brings me to another question: Would Matilda, as the new Queen Regnant, actually allow Caleb's princely title to be removed?
Considering everything Caleb has done for the country, I would find it difficult to believe that his family would simply erase that part of his identity. Heck even the Parliament itself, after the exposure of Andrew's actions.
Of course, the exact legal consequences would depend on the fictional monarchy's constitutional arrangements and the formal terms of Caleb's departure.
But personally, I would love to see him retain his princely title, even if he chooses not to use his HRH style(because he will not be in active duty anymore).
Caleb's Freedom: A Clean Slate or a Forced Exile From His Identity?
I also came across another post from @TXTfromEra , and it made me think about something else.
Perhaps what the story is trying to convey is that Caleb has always been made to feel as though he does not truly belong.
He was constantly reminded, directly or indirectly, that he was different, that he was not genuinely part of the Royal Family, and that he did not belong in the world into which he was brought up.
So perhaps leaving royalty behind represents a clean slate for him.
A chance to escape the palace, the political games, the expectations, and the suffering associated with the Crown.
But there is one thing I want to emphasize:
Caleb will always have a connection to the British Royal Family, regardless of whether he is or not biologically related to the King.
Based on what the series has presented, Caleb is still legally recognized as the King's son, unless Emo Universe intends to introduce another major revelation.
We also need to distinguish between biological parentage and legal recognition.
Being biologically related to a monarch is not necessarily the only consideration in determining someone's legal family status or entitlement to a title. However, formal adoption, recognition as a child, succession rights, and entitlement to royal titles are separate legal matters.
They should not automatically be treated as interchangeable.
In other words, even if Caleb is not the King's biological son, that does not automatically erase every connection he has to the Royal Family.
However, I also want to clarify something about relinquishing royal titles.
Simply announcing that you no longer wish to use a title does not necessarily mean that the title has legally ceased to exist.
There is a difference between voluntarily ceasing to use a title and formally surrendering or losing the legal entitlement to it.
Depending on the monarchy's constitutional framework, changes to royal styles and titles may require formal action, such as Letters Patent or other legal instruments. Parliament may also have a role where legislation is involved.
Therefore, I would not automatically assume that Caleb's decision to step away from royal duties means that he must surrender his princely title.
And since Matilda is now Queen Regnant, I genuinely wonder whether she would allow that to happen.
After everything Caleb has done for the country, would she really want him to lose the title of Prince altogether?
Personally, I hope not.
He can choose a quieter life with Arian without necessarily having to erase his royal identity.(as they say we can never run away with our past, but face it, deal with it. And focus on what we have in the present).
His experiences, his contributions, and his place in that family are much more complicated than simply being labelled a commoner.
What I Hope to See in Season 3
I think we can all agree that Season 2 left us with several unanswered questions.
If Emo Universe proceeds with Season 3, which we understand will explore Arian's past, I hope the writers will also revisit some of the unresolved matters from the previous seasons.
In particular, I would love to see further clarification regarding Caleb's parentage, his mother's background, and the circumstances surrounding his place in the line of succession.
As for the character introductions in Season 3, we might be expecting this:
Caleb Whitmore
- Former Prince(although I am still hoping he retains the Title of Prince)
Fiancé of the Godfather
Arian Conti
- The Godfather
Honestly, I am still hoping that Caleb will retain his princely title, even if he no longer uses HRH.
And if Queen Matilda could send him a personal message, I would love something like this:
To my dearest Caleb,
We love you, and I respect your decision to relinquish your HRH style and step away from your royal responsibilities.
However, everything you have done for our country will never be forgotten. Whether or not you share our blood, you will always be part of this family.
You may choose to leave the Crown behind, but you will always be Prince Caleb. And The King to people's hearts.
With love,
Queen Matilda
P.S. Do remember to invite us to your wedding!
And Caleb is also loved by the People! Remember that!
I WOULD ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS. XD
FINAL THOUGHTS:
I am not saying my theories are necessarily correct. I am simply looking at the story through the perspectives of royal history, succession disputes, family politics, and psychological manipulation.
I hope the writers clarify Caleb's biological parentage, his legal status within the Royal Family, and his entitlement to royal titles, as these are three different matters. Of course, the direction of the story is ultimately Emo Universe's creative decision.
His place in this family's history should never be dismissed. And his Sister's love him dearly.
Sorry for this very long post, and if you see redundancy. My mind is racing a lot while typing this.
