May 1942 —Japan controls Philippines for a significant period during #WWII (1942-1945), following surrender of US-PHILIPPINE Forces on #Corregidor, but it wasn't a permanent and total occupation.
The Philippines was eventually liberated by Allied forces
led by General Douglas MacArthur. MacArthur returned to the Philippines in October 1944, after escaping to Australia, where he was appointed Supreme Commander of the Southwest Pacific Area in April. He promised he would return to the Philippines
and he did return, landing on Leyte Gulf in October 1944. His forces, including American troops and Filipino guerrillas, launched a campaign to recapture the archipelago from the Japanese.
War in the Philippines would continue until the official Japanese surrender on September 2, 1945. Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu, representing the Emperor of Japan, would sign the Instrument of Surrender
— prepared by the War Department and approved by President Harry S. Truman.
