UN Press Statement 17 September 2026, Nicosia – The Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhüman and the Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides met today under United Nations auspices in the United Nations Protected Area. They held a good discussion on confidence building measures, methodology and substance. The two leaders will brief the United Nations Secretary-General on their work and discuss the way forward.

Last night Israel attacked an airfield in northern Syria, which Turkey had begun to move into. This is the latest escalation in a proxy war the two countries are waging now. This is clearly what Israel has marked as its next war and next enemy: 1) The Israeli airforce hit Abu al-Duhur airfield in northeastern Syria. Israel hasn't officially confirmed or denied it. Syrian state media, Turkey, and US envoy Tom Barrack all attributed it to Israel and condemned it. 2) the Turks were trying to establish a permanent presence there and install detection radars and air-defense/interceptor batteries. That the IDF believed would seriously constrain Israeli air force freedom of action over Syria. 3) This is not the first time. In April 2025 a strike on the T4 airbase, hit as Turkish forces, engineers, and contractors were moving in. Israel bombed the runways to signal it wouldn't accept Turkish presence there. 4) To avoid confrontation with Trump, the base was attacked at night when it was empty. But they are clearly willing to risk a rift over this. I asked a source in the IDF about this, they told me that "preventing Turkey from basing itself permanently is a high interest of ours and we will prevent it." The problem is that the Syrian government wants more of a Turkish presence there. This is an almost certain path to war if Israel continues to define its interests in Syria this widely.
