We're being Ripped Off by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), our Governor and the Legislature who have mandated that California have fuel blends that are different than anywhere else in the US. The Cost of Fuel here is 40% higher than the rest of the US, causing economic harm to Californians. Your car doesn't know which state it's in and, for all intents and purposes, runs the same everywhere.
FUEL COMPOSITION AND ENGINE CONTROLS
Our fuel blends add extra oxygenate compounds which are purported to reduce smog and may work on older vehicles. But, every vehicle made in the last 30 years has oxygen sensor based fuel control systems and catalytic convertors, which are adaptive to fuel blends and standardize air fuel ratio and exhaust oxygen content to pre established levels for optimum catalytic convertor function.
CATALYTIC CONVERTER FUNCTION
Oxidation reactions occur when hot gases containing oxygen, unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide come into contact with platinum and rhodium surfaces in honeycomb structures in the catalytic convertor. This makes CO2 and H2O.
Reduction reactions occur when Nitrogen Oxide in the exhaust donates oxygen, making harmless Nitrogen in the tailpipe exhaust and giving oxygen atoms to the rest of the catalytic converter lowering hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide.
The engine management system is in very precise closed loop feedback control after only about 10 seconds on a cold engine, with exhaust temperatures reaching around 900 degrees very rapidly.
FUEL BLEND COMPENSATION
When fuel blends add oxygenate, the fuel system enriches the mixture (more fuel, less air) in order to maintain the same as before oxygen level in the exhaust WORSENING FUEL ECONOMY, because oxygenate is not an energy contributor to the fuel mixture.
Our Gas is a diluted expensive mess, perpetrated by bureaucrats with pre determined agendas pushing through harmful regulations.
