Our second Utah park visited was Capitol Reef! There were some really cool sights here such as Glass Mountain. This geological formation consists of transparent selenite crystal above ground!

This looks like a solid skyscraper, but is actually composed of Entrada Sandstoneβthe same geologic layer that forms the famous arches in Arches National Park. #capitolreef #cathedralvalley #utahadventures #utah

π₯ βοΈ Capitol Reef National Park
nestled in south-central Utah's Colorado Plateau, spans 377 square miles and showcases a dramatic 100-mile-long geologic wrinkle known as the Waterpocket Fold.

βΆοΈ A classic monocline where ancient sedimentary layers tilt steeply on one side while remaining nearly flat on the other.
This exposed stack of rocks, nearly 10,000 feet thick, reveals over 250 million years of Earth's history, from Permian deserts to Jurassic seas and Cretaceous river deltas, painted in vibrant reds, whites, yellows, and pinks from iron oxides and other minerals.
βοΈ The park's geology began in the Permian Period around 270 million years ago, when vast Saharan-like dunes buried the region under windblown sands, forming the white, cliff-forming Kaibab Limestone after marine waters later flooded the area, depositing fossils like brachiopods and crinoids.
βοΈ An erosional gap followed before the Triassic Moenkopi Formation (about 245 million years ago) layered on brown siltstones from ancient mudflats and rivers, topped by the colorful, bentonite-rich Chinle Formation shales that hold petrified wood and early dinosaur tracks.
βοΈ By the Late Triassic, the massive red Wingate Sandstone dunes, similar to today's Simpson Desert, built towering cliffs, while the Early Jurassic Kayenta Formation added river sands and muds.
βοΈ The Middle Jurassic brought tidal flats and shallow seas that deposited the reddish Entrada Sandstone, whose jointed layers erode into the park's iconic cathedrals, monoliths, and goblins in Cathedral Valley, echoing features in nearby Arches and Goblin Valley parks. Above it, the Curtis Formation's limy sands and shales form protective caps.
βοΈ The highlight is the Early Jurassic Navajo Sandstone, a 2,000-foot-thick cross-bedded behemoth of ancient desert dunes that creates rounded white domes like Capitol Dome (inspiring the park's name alongside the "reef-like" barrier of cliffs) and curvilinear canyons such as those at Navajo Knob. Later, the Late Jurassic Morrison Formation dumped river gravels and muds rich in dinosaur bones, while Cretaceous rocks like the Straight Cliffs Formation added coal swamps and oyster reefs.
βοΈ The Waterpocket Fold itself formed 50β70 million years ago during the Laramide Orogeny, when compression from the rising Rockies reactivated a buried fault, buckling the overlying sediments into this steep east-facing escarpment that traps "water pockets" in its potholes. Erosion then sculpted the landscape: wind and flash floods widened canyons, carved arches, and exposed the tilted strata.
Volcanic activity 20β30 million years ago capped nearby mountains with basalt, and Ice Age glaciers within the last 150,000 years plucked black boulders from those heights, depositing them via floods and landslides across the park's valleys.
Today, ongoing erosion reveals strike valleys, dikes, gypsum domes, and colorful bentonite hills, making Capitol Reef a living textbook of plateau geology.
