Look, I don't enjoy reading scary stuff for the sake of it, but if you want a horror novel that is also a tender romance that will rip your heart out, read ODD THOMAS by Dean Koontz. #Ch1Chat

Well. I don't read scary. Or spooky. At all. Imma chicken. 🐓 BUT. I have to say that The Scorpio Races is one of my favorite mildly creepy books. And that's coming from someone who has equinophobia. #Ch1Chat

Every year that I've participated, I've decided at the last possible minute "WHATEVER, I'M DOING IT!" and then I just WING IT. One year I joined on NOVEMBER 27TH. Wrote 25k words tho. (I do not recommend this approach.) #Ch1Chat

Without further ado, let’s get started! #Ch1Chat Q1: When it comes to #NaNoWriMo, How do you prep? Do you outline plot points, do general world building, or just...cry? What strategies have you tried in prep for #nanowrimo2018 ?

So. I have two examples. 1. I wrote a story about butterflies and made them giant and human-eating. 2. Not scary, but I did make flowers a bad thing once. #Ch1Chat

#Ch1Chat Q5: @jbrantwrites wants to know, do you think it’s easy to make other people afraid of things that you aren’t afraid of? Have you ever turned something seemingly simple into a symbol of ~evil~ in a story? Looking at you, Stephen King😒

@Ch1Con Absolutely. Scooby Doo is the best Halloween thing to watch (at least for me who is a chicken). :P #Ch1Chat

OMINOUS DREAMS. So cliched. So Victorian Gothic. So necessary. #Ch1Chat

#Ch1Chat Q4: Our team member @thenoblezoe wants to know your favorite campy/mysterious/creepy trope! What’s the one kinda-cliche-but-omg-so-effective device you find yourself using again and again to build #suspense?

@Ch1Con XD Yes. I wish I could do a Scooby Doo style chase scene with everyone running in all the different doors, but that's a thing that's definitely better visual than in text. #Ch1Chat

Oooh. My favorite mysterious trope is definitely when the friend turns out to be a monster of some sort or working with the villain or is the villain and you get subtle hints but you don't notice until the plot twist happens and AHH IT'S AMAZING. #Ch1Chat

@thenoblezoe Sorry, not sorry, Zo. 😇 Honestly, I'll probably hit the inevitable "oh crap" stage in a week or two and then you won't be able to get me to shut up. ...also, don't you have the link to the Google Doc where I'm writing it??? Just sayin'. #Ch1Chat

For me, it's making sure that the book has lots of the stuff I love to write, like action scenes and tormented ethical decisions. For my readers, it's definitely having a good structure in place with plenty of twists and turns. Every scene should end with a disaster. #Ch1Chat

#Ch1Chat Q3: For those of you who’ve done #NaNoWriMo (or any other long-term writing project) how do you maintain suspense from start to finish? What are your tricks to keep your readers (and yourself) from getting too comfortable or bored?

Oh, nothing except that this book is one I've been waiting to write and dreaming of writing for the last 4 years. It is a blend of Wonder Woman, Chretien de Troyes and The Curse of Chalion. Plus, swoony villainous romance. yesplz. #Ch1Chat

#Ch1Chat Q2: What aspect of #nanowrimo2018 us keeping you in the most suspense? Is it a certain scene you can’t WAIT to get to? Is it the fear of failure? The prospect of success?

Outline. Outline. Outline. I've already spent big chunks of 2 months on my outline. It's a time for just sitting, walking, showering, and THINKING. I failed to do that for my previous novel. And then I had to do it anyway. And rewrite it from scratch. Not fun. #Ch1Chat
