𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐲: 𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐓𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝟐𝟎𝟑𝟎 𝟏𝟐 𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 We, the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ), condemn in the strongest terms the Zimbabwean government's theme of National Heroes and Defence Forces Day set to be commemorated on the 12th and 13th of August, respectively. The theme is dubbed "Guaranteeing a Conducive Environment for Attainment of Vision 2030." What a cruel joke! Instead of creating an environment conducive to progress and development, this despotic regime has launched a crackdown on dissent, trampling on the human rights of its own citizens. According to Amnesty International, over 160 people have been arrested since mid-June, just in time for the SADC summit slated for 17 August 2024- a transparent attempt to project a façade of stability while ruthlessly silencing any voices of opposition. And the horrific treatment of our fellow Zimbabweans is nothing short of sickening. Worth noting is that ARTUZ has reported that our Secretary General, Robson Chere, has been subjected to unimaginable torture, including having his head shaved with a knife, waterboarding, and savage beatings with metal rods. This is the "conducive environment" the government is striving for? Let us not forget the other victims of the vicious crackdown - Namatai Kwekweza, Samuel Gwenzi, and Vusumuzi Moyo, all reportedly pulled off a flight and then tortured. And to add insult to unspeakable injury, Cde Chere is being denied access to vital medical care for his chronic kidney condition. This is nothing but a desperate attempt by the government to project an image of stability and progress, while simultaneously crushing the very spirit and aspirations of the Zimbabwean people. Torture, arbitrary detention, and the persecution of civil society leaders are the antithesis of a "conducive environment." ARTUZ demands an immediate end to these abhorrent human rights violations. The international community must hold this tyrannical regime accountable and take decisive action to protect the fundamental freedoms of all Zimbabweans. Only then can we even begin to speak of an environment conducive to the attainment of any vision, let alone their twisted version of "Vision 2030." The actions of this government are a sickening betrayal of the very sacrifices that our national heroes made. They should be ashamed to even utter the words "National Heroes Day" while they trample on the values and principles that those heroes fought and died for.
