FLIXBOROUGH NYPRO UK LTD CYCLOHEXANE INCIDENT OVERVIEW The Flixborough vapour cloud explosion incident, also known as the Flixborough disaster, occurred on the 1st of June 1974. The incident occurred just outside Flixborough in North Lincolnshire, England. It was a major industrial accident that resulted in a large explosion and subsequent fire at the chemical plant, the incident was caused by a ruptured pipeline at the Nypro (UK) Ltd’s cyclohexane plant, the pipeline in question had recently been installed to bypass a reactor which was offline. The pipeline failure released a large quantity of cyclohexane believed to be an estimated 20 tons, cyclohexane is a highly flammable and highly explosive substance, and the subsequent vapour cloud ignited and caused a large vapour cloud explosion. The explosion was so powerful that it destroyed large parts of the plant and nearby buildings, including several houses up to 15km away. The blast killed 28 people, including employees of the plant and members of the local community, and also severely injured 36 others on site and 53 off site. The incident caused significant damage to the surrounding area, with the explosion heard several miles away.
