shared how frustrating
it is to reach out to an incumbent Governor she used to be friends with, and still has his contact.
I could feel her pain.
Perhaps a little backstory is needed.
In my early formative years as an attorney in one of Nigeria’s leading legal institutions,
I had the rare privilege of working with someone currently very high up
in the Presidency.
Old family. Blue blood.
Ivy league education.
Distinction in Masters.
Married. Brilliant. Regal.
Back in 2013/2014,
he introduced me to ST at Polo Club, Ikoyi.
I still remember
the drive.
We came in through Okotie-Eboh Street, just off Awolowo Road, Ikoyi.
Then into the street that once housed the seat of power in Nigeria — DODAN PRESIDENTIAL "PALACE" - A PLACE THAT FORGED KINGS AND DESTROYED MEN.
We turned left.
Then another left.
Even then,
as a young lawyer,
I saw it first hand:
Power changes
the air around you.
The access. The tone. The gatekeepers.
Meeting ST was memorable.
ST has a presence.
Even as a young man,
ST understood power.
How to leverage relationships.
How to build on social capital to achieve more.
He had just started
his media business
back then and needed my colleague’s input.
He would later end up working for him full time.
That very night,
I exchanged
contacts with ST.
But I never used it.
Before we left, ST asked that we follow his convoy to a club
around VI.
SIP or ZIP,
if I could recall.
But I didn’t stay long.
I had to leave the next morning for a very important weekend engagement.
Because I understood one thing about power:
Power is best used
in restraint.
You don’t use the
access you have until
it becomes
the only option.
You don’t want
to blow goodwill.
Why share this now?
My colleague turned friend who introduced me to ST currently
works very close to BAT.
He has BAT's eyes/ears.
Perhaps sees him almost every day as he is a key part of the Presidency.
But I have never had to call him to leverage
that access.
My value is not reduced by whether someone in the corridors of power answers due to pressure of that position.
I’m grateful that
my contact at the Presidency still responded the last time
I messaged him.
But I would honestly understand if he didn’t.
Well maybe
that is too harsh.
Maybe we’re not yesterday’s news.
But the reality is,
there are more people competing for his attention now
than ever was.
I for one understand that and sure emphatise with him the burden he has to carrying.
Balancing varying interests while having
to watch his back.
I also emphathise
with him
when a mutual friend
who went to a UK Uni with both him and ST reached out to me -
complaining she never got a "juicy" federal appointment,
despite herself and Mumcee being prominent members of the Ruling Part - and made key sacrifices
to BAT's emergence.
The mutual friend would particularly point fingers at the duo of "P"
and ST becoming
nearly unreachable - post election.
I understood where she was coming from and
I also could, to an extent, appreciate the journey of both ST & "P".
So when someone who is busy running a state
or a nation still takes
30 seconds to reply,
you don’t take it
for granted.
You say thank you.
And you don’t abuse it.
And when they do not,
perhaps because
their old line is
being managed
by an overzealous SA
[Special Adviser] or
PA [Personal Adviser]
You should give them
Grace and factor in a
Good number of reasons
For such outcome.
And if you have the means to go to their office to schedule a
Phsyical meeting. DO!
BUT DO NOT GO EMPTY HANDED AND ALSO PREPARE YOU MIND
TO BE DISAPPOINTED
OR HAVE YOUR
MIND BLOWN.
PREPARE FOR EITHER
OUTCOME AND STILL BE GRACEFUL ABOUT IT.
