The sad news this morning from my area where I live really shocked me. A true story from just a few buildings away. A couple lived in a compound with two other tenants but chose to completely isolate themselves. No greetings, no conversations, no basic neighbourly interaction. Late last year and early this year, the other tenants welcomed new babies. No congratulations. They were invited for the christening, they didn’t show up. They kept their distance from everyone. This neighbour was also pregnant and waiting to welcome her own baby as well. Then in the early hours of this morning, the woman went into labour while her husband was away. The hospital was far, and because she had no relationship with anyone around her, she didn’t call for help. No neighbour. No support system. She tried to go through it alone at home, there were complications. She and the baby didn’t survive. This is beyond just being “private.” This is what isolation can cost. In Nigeria, where emergency systems are not always reliable, your first responders are often the people closest to you and they are your neighbours. The same people we ignore, avoid, or feel too important to acknowledge. You don’t have to be close friends with everyone, but basic human connection matters. Greet people. Exchange numbers. Build small bridges. It could save a life, maybe even yours. Community is not just culture, it is survival.
