The Trabablas Interchange in the capital Harare - named after President Emmerson Mnangagwa and remarkable for its visibly poor workmanship - is set to be commissioned by the head of state and government today after being constructed at an inflated cost of US$88 million.
This expensive project has been surrounded by big controversy, with many questioning its price tag.
Compared to similar projects in the region, such as South Africa's Mount Edgecombe Interchange in uMhlanga, Durban, which cost US$65.9 million, the Trabalas traffic interchange's price is clearly excessive.
Overpricing: Critics say that the project's cost is inflated, with some estimating that it could have been built for less.
Lack of Transparency: There are concerns about the tender process and the awarding of contracts to politically connected individuals.
Corruption Allegations: Fossil Contracting, a company owned by businessman Obey Chimuka who is linked to controversial businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei, was part of the consortium that built the interchange, raising concerns about cronyism and corruption by those who say the price is inflated to cater for bribes and kickbacks for individuals and officials involved.
