A major vertical of our AI research lab (#CRASHLab) at @KCDH_A @AshokaUniv focusses on creating personalized AI outputs for each physician and radiologist using small open models!
Last year DSPy and GEPA, courtesy of @lateinteraction and later @LakshyAAAgrawal convinced me that for generating radiology reports in our own style, prompt optimisation was all that was needed. We in turn convinced radiologists at @RSNA in Chicago with 3 accepted abstracts in this domain.
Now with autoresearch from @karpathy (and ofc others who built coscientists and similar priors), I am increasingly convinced that we, in the future, will be able to customize most of our models for our healthcare setups without depending on costly APIs or proprietary models.
This entire set of experiments was run autonomously on my MacBook M3 36 GB while I slept.
However I want to bring to the notice of people is that we still need human oversight because during my initial runs (as you can in the initial half) the model added all examples to the Few Shot Learning samples to "game" the evals or "cheating / benchmaxxing" as many people do today.
So I had to put guardrails during the second iteration, and restrict the number of examples in FSL to 5 input output pairs. Which is where you see the sudden drop in evals (scores), but then it gradually picks up and saturates.
But if everyone is now able to run and adapt open small models for their setups freely, my question is, what remains the moat for these proprietary AI labs?
One argument which you make is that 99% of people still do nit know how to set this up. But my counter would be that it is today. Few years down the line, everyone would be able to do this. Or softwares will come before and make it easier for people to do this.
Nevertheless, the future seems more and more unpredictable and it is now all the more exciting to lead AI research for healthcare in India! ๐ฎ๐ณ

We currently work in developing multimodal models, evaluating foundational models and multi-agent systems in healthcare, building hyperpersonalised workflows using DSPy, GEPA, TextGrad, etc. as well as in large scale national evaluations of frontier LLMs and Ambient AI.
๐ฅ We are also at the intersection of policy and interdisciplinary research and GPU compute is not a problem. We also have a dedicated 8 x 8 H100 cluster.
