18 days ago, #CUCO #A2804896 was a healthy, sweet three-year-old dog.
Today 8/9, he is dead🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
In those 18 days, Cuco was neutered. Then, just days later, he contracted an upper respiratory infection on August 1st. That infection progressed into pneumonia.
And yesterday, August 8th, Cuco was visibly critical. He could barely move. His breathing was labored.
He could barely lift his head from his bed. His eyes told the story of a dog who was desperately trying to hold on. People walked past him and saw him like this. Yet no emergency intervention came. No urgent plea for help. No desperate call for rescue. No apparent attempt to get him the level of medical care he needed while there was still time.
Instead, we are being told that Cuco was finally taken to MVS today, August 9th and he died.
TODAY After nine days of illness. Nine days from the reported onset of his respiratory infection to the day he was finally taken for advanced medical care.
And that raises a devastating question:
Why wasn’t he taken sooner? Why wait until a healthy three-year-old dog was barely able to lift his head and struggling to breathe?‼️‼️‼️
Why neuter a dog during an outbreak when there was no immediate adoption or rescue placement requiring it, potentially adding additional stress to an already vulnerable immune system?
Neutering could have waited. His medical emergency couldn’t.‼️‼️
This is a shelter that calls itself no-kill and claims to do everything necessary to protect and save the animals in its care.
But what happened to Cuco? A healthy, sweet three-year-old dog entered this shelter. Sixteen days later, he was fighting for his life.
And when he was finally taken for emergency care, it was apparently too late. Cuco didn’t need a miracle. He needed someone to act when he was sick. He needed someone to recognize that an upper respiratory infection was becoming something much more serious. He needed medical intervention before pneumonia took over.‼️‼️‼️
He needed someone to look at him yesterday, barely moving, struggling to breathe, barely lifting his head and say:
“This dog cannot wait.”
Instead, an advocate had to beg them to see him and take a picture/video. Instead he waited and suffered.
And today, he died.💔
Cuco should have left this shelter alive. He should have been someone’s beloved dog, sleeping on a couch, going for walks, playing with toys and living the happy life a three-year-old dog deserves.
Instead, his entire story at this shelter lasted just 16 days.
From healthy and sweet to critically ill to dead.
Cuco, I am so sorry. You deserved someone to fight for you while you were still here. You deserved timely medical care. You deserved a chance. You deserved to live.
You were failed when you needed them most. 💔
