In 1995, Terrell Davis was a 6th-round pick by the Denver Broncos.
He was 6th on the depth chart and didn't play in the team's first preseason game.
He thought he was getting cut.
In the 3rd quarter of the next game, the special teams coach put him in.
That moment changed everything for him.
Terrell knew this was his opportunity. He wasn't getting chances in practice so he had to take advantage of finally playing.
And that's what he did.
He ran down the field on the kickoff and made an outstanding hit to tackle the returner. You could hear the hit from a mile away.
The hit captured everyone's attention.
John Elway said, "No question that when Terrell went down on that kickoff, it got everyone’s attention."
Mike Shanahan on the headset immediately told the running backs coach, "I want Terrell in. We’re going to get him in the game."
That was the beginning. Terrell didn't know all of the plays, but he focused on running hard every single play.
From there, he kept getting better and better in each practice and preseason game.
His difference was his toughness, focus, and how hard he dedicated himself every single play.
His mantra and focus came from his college days where he would tell himself, "Do and be my best."
Years later, Gary Kubiak would show his rookies that tape and tell them that you can always make a difference. If you go do this on a kickoff, that will help you make the team.
Terrell not only made the team, but he was the starting RB for the 1995 season.
From that moment, he never looked back.
In his first 4 years, he would win 2 Super Bowls, lead the league in rushing, and have a 2,000-yard season.
In 2017, he was inducted into the hall-of-fame.
