When someone is identified as the ideological architect of the country’s division, does being recognised as his teacher bring honour, or does it diminish one’s stature? It is a question worth asking. History is history. Whether it enhances someone’s reputation or tarnishes it, history cannot be changed. The truth is that Iqbal’s teacher was a man whose name adorns a cloth market in Chandni Chowk, Delhi. Ustad Daagh had the good fortune, or perhaps the misfortune, of being Iqbal’s mentor. Ustad Daagh’s full name was Nawab Mirza Khan. He was a remarkable personality and an immensely popular poet, both during his lifetime and in the years that followed. Born in Delhi in May 1831, he breathed his last in Deccan Hyderabad. He left Delhi during the final days of the Mughal Empire, settled in Hyderabad, and passed away in 1905. Yet, he is remembered to this day as Daagh Dehlvi. Daagh’s life makes for a fascinating story, and he himself was quite a character. When it came to romance, his personal score was considerably higher than the average for his times! Daagh was among the last great poets of the classical Urdu tradition, whose social circle included literary giants such as Zauq and Ghalib.
