Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, today participated in the 22nd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Science, Technology and Innovation (AMMSTI-22) in Vientiane, Lao PDR.
Themed “Advancing the ASEAN Plan of Action on Science, Technology and Innovation (APASTI) for a Resilient, Sustainable and Competitive ASEAN,” the meeting discussed the role of science, technology and innovation in strengthening regional resilience to address transnational and shared challenges, deepening strategic cooperation with external partners to advance shared goals and collective prosperity, and preparing ASEAN for technologies that will shape the future.
The Ministers unanimously endorsed a landmark restructuring of the ASEAN COSTI sub-committee framework from nine to five focused sub-committees, strengthening regional STI governance, enhancing strategic alignment with APASTI, and enabling impactful delivery of ASEAN STI priorities.

Coming on September 21st on Blu-ray in the UK from @Eurekavideo as part of their #MastersOfCinema Series: #EasternTrails: The #Western at #DEFA (1967-1975)!
A close relation to the Spaghetti Western, Indianerfilme (later called “Red Westerns” due to their politics) were some of the most popular genre movies produced by East Germany’s state-operated film studio, DEFA. Focusing on the struggles of indigenous tribes against European settlers, they disrupted the frontier myths central to the American Western and made a bonafide superstar of Gojko Mitić, whose appearances in a long line of action-packed Westerns for DEFA made him one of the most famous faces in Europe. Mitić stars in all four of the films presented here: Chingachgook the Great Serpent, Fatal Error, Apaches and Blood Brothers.
Based on James Fenimore Cooper’s The Deerslayer, Chingachgook the Great Serpent sees the eponymous Mohican set out to rescue his kidnapped bride-to-be (Andrea Drahota) with the help of a hunter known as Deerslayer (Rolf Römer). In Fatal Error, Native Americans living at the foot of the Rocky Mountains come to regret doing business with the corrupt Wyoming Oil Company. Apaches follows a young warrior as he sets out to avenge the massacre of his tribe at the hands of a ruthless mercenary (Milan Beli). Finally, Blood Brothers stars Dean Reed – an actor and singer-songwriter nicknamed the “Red Elvis” – as an American deserter who comes to fight alongside a Native American tribe.
Following the enormous success of The Sons of Great Bear in 1966, East Germany’s series of Indianerfilme remained popular for the next two decades, finding enthusiastic audiences throughout Central and Eastern Europe and even as far afield as Cuba. The Masters of Cinema series is thrilled to present a selection of DEFA’s “Red Westerns” on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK.

🌅ASEAN just delivered a wake-up call for Australia!
Last week in Manila, ASEAN Member States concluded negotiations on the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (#DEFA) — the world’s first comprehensive region-wide digital economy pact. 🎯Target signing: November 2026.
The agreement explicitly covers:
✅Digital trade facilitation & simplified procedures
✅Trusted cross-border data flows
✅Digital payments and electronic transactions
✅Greater digital interoperability
✅Fintech, AI and forward-looking rules
This is not just another trade agreement. It is the clearest signal yet that digital trade will be inseparable from digital payments and tokenised trade finance. The writing is on the wall. For Australia’s central agencies and lawmakers, the message is urgent: Accelerating #MLETR implementation is no longer optional.
Interoperability standards and regulated digital payments infrastructure are now table stakes. Tokenisation of trade lending and real-time liquidity will dominate the next decade of trade — not as a “nice-to-have”, but as the competitive edge.
#ASEAN is moving at speed. Australia cannot afford to be a spectator in its own backyard. The practical bridge is already being built — through corridors such as the India–Australia supply chain facilitated by Murundi Group and @XDCTradeNetwork (with #TradeTrust-powered partners), where documents, payments and tokenised finance are to be tested.
Whole-of-government coordination, co-design with industry, and a permanent technology & infrastructure voice on the NCTF have never been more important. The future of trade is digital and financial.
Let’s make sure Australia leads, not lags. #DigitalTrade #ASEANDEFA #TradeFinance #Tokenisation #MLETR #AustraliaASEAN #DTF2026

***ANNOUNCEMENT***
Coming on July 20th on Blu-ray in the UK from @EurekaVideo as part of their #MasterOfCinema line: #Into the Forest: Folktales at #DEFA (1955-1977)!
Between 1950 and 1989, the East German studio DEFA produced a huge number of Märchenfilme, or adaptations of popular fairy and folktales. By turns macabre, heartwarming, odd, whimsical and occasionally downright frightening, these visually arresting and luridly colourful pictures drew on the works of authors such as Wilhelm Hauff, Hans Christian Andersen and, above all, the Brothers Grimm. Some of the finest – and darkest – DEFA folktales include The Devil from Mill Mountain, The Singing Ringing Tree, Rumpelstiltskin, Little Red Riding Hood and The Devil’s Three Golden Hairs.
In The Devil from Mill Mountain, a greedy miller attracts the ire of forest spirits when he and his accomplices disguise themselves as demons to burn down a rival mill. In The Singing Ringing Tree, a young prince must find a legendary tree to win the heart of an icy princess – and risks being transformed into a bear if she fails to fall in love with him. Rumpelstiltskin follows a young woman whose boastful father claims she can spin straw into gold, leading her to make an ill-advised pact with a magical imp. Then, the eponymous Little Red Riding Hood sets off to see her sick grandmother, relying on her friends the rabbit and the bear to help her evade the cunning fox and the big bad wolf. Finally, The Devil’s Three Golden Hairs sees an unfortunate young man tasked with travelling into hell to retrieve three golden hairs from the Devil himself.
DEFA’s Märchenfilme were perhaps the most enduringly successful genre films produced in East Germany, remaining popular for as long as the German Democratic Republic existed – but they are criminally under-seen outside of the former Eastern Bloc. Filled with uncanny imagery and socialist messaging in equal measure, DEFA’s folktale adaptations are both immeasurably important to Germany’s film heritage and wildly entertaining examples of popular European cinema. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present these five Märchenfilme together for the first time on Blu-ray in the UK.

🌱Ready to Grow—ASEAN MSMEs Go Digital! 🚀
Across ASEAN, there is a rapidly growing opportunity to help small businesses get ready for new digital trade frameworks like #DEFA (ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement). By strengthening digital skills, improving access to clear information in local languages, and building trust in online systems, more businesses—especially women-led and rural enterprises—can take part in and benefit from the region’s expanding digital economy.
Through the Open Trade Pillar of the ASEAN-UK Economic Integration Programme (#EIP), the UK Government is supporting the ASEAN Coordinating Committee on Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (ACCMSME) through the MSME Digital Trade Outreach Toolkit. This toolkit provides simple, localised resources to help small businesses adopt digital trade tools and participate more fully in ASEAN’s digital economy.
💡Join us at the workshop on 24 April 2026 to be part of a discussion and learn more about what the Digital Trade Toolkit is; how the toolkit may benefit MSMEs, and how the toolkit may help MSMEs in adopting digital solutions, overcoming barriers and effectively participating in cross-border trade across the region.
