Stop writing academic papers like a robot.
Tell stories instead.
Most academic writing puts people to sleep.
But it doesn't have to.
Academic storytelling changes everything.
Here's why it works:

Was there a golden age in scientific writing and it's all been downhill since? Or is our writing getting better? https://t.co/DmbldACGad
#devbiolwriteclub rules #1 and #2. Do the work.
"I write only when inspiration strikes. Fortunately it strikes every morning at nine o'clock sharp."

"The Witch of Atlas" by Percy Bysshe Shelley was written in 1820 - composed in three days after an excursion in the Italian mountains.
First published posthumously in 1824, it was dedicated to his wife Mary Shelley.
Happy National Poetry Night :)))

#devbiolwriteclub surgical strike. Stop everything! Set timer for 20 minutes. Write!!! Get to work!!!!
Yes! My writing groups are one of my most important resources. But to be effective, everyone in the group needs to be on the same page. Strongly recommend the advice on writing groups in Paul Silva's book, below.

#devbiolwriteclub. Are you reading with intent? Are you making an effort to read? You should be.
In a culture of constant busyness, finding the time to read can be challenging.
Here's a list of some excellent SHORT books you can read in just a few hours:

So stoked to do the work tonight. #devbiolwriteclub

#devbiolwriteclub rule #4. Read with intent.
Are you finding it harder to read lately? Do you want to read more books but find your attention fragmented?
I have some suggestions that could change your life. ๐งต

Did I leave the coffee shop where I was thinking and writing about axonemal dyneins to go to another coffeeshop to think and write about 19th century chick embryology? Yes, yes, I did. Is it working? Yes, yes it is. #devbiolwriteclub

Ok #devbiolwriteclub, time for a summer re-boot. Set timer for 45 minutes. READ. And read with intent! Rule #4.

Reading is possibly the perfect hobby. You can do it alone, you can do it with others, you can do it lying in bed, you can read for pleasure or learning or both at once. Folks who donโt read are missing one of lifeโs greatest joys.
#devbiolwriteclub, get to work! Set timer for 15 minutes. Write!!!

You'll often hear writing advice that boils down to "just write!". But that isn't actually all that helpful. Ursula Le Guin realized this, and built it into some writing advice with a fun tuba analogy. My riff on that:

#devbiolwriteclub rule #4. Read with Intent. (Or in this case plan ahead so can always read with intent at a momentโs notice.)
Umberto Eco, who owned 50,000 books, had this to say about home libraries:
"It is foolish to think that you have to read all the books you buy, as it is foolish to criticize those who buy more books than they will ever be able to read. It would be like saying that you should use all the cutlery or glasses or screwdrivers or drill bits you bought before buying new ones.
"There are things in life that we need to always have plenty of supplies, even if we will only use a small portion.
"If, for example, we consider books as medicine, we understand that it is good to have many at home rather than a few: when you want to feel better, then you go to the 'medicine closet' and choose a book. Not a random one, but the right book for that moment. That's why you should always have a nutrition choice!
"Those who buy only one book, read only that one and then get rid of it. They simply apply the consumer mentality to books, that is, they consider them a consumer product, a good. Those who love books know that a book is anything but a commodity."

Ok #devbiolwriteclub, great opportunity here to hit two Rules in one. Rule #3: Revise and edit again and again. Rule #5: You canโt do it alone. Let @LSE_editors help you do both!!! ๐๐ป
