#Byzantine Michael II Komnenos Dukas despot of #Epiros. 1237-1271 Weight of 3 Nomismata.ΔЄCΠOTHC O Δ૪KAC MIXAΗΛ OPΘOΔOΣOC This weight carries the name of Michael II Komnenos Dukas, the first ruler of the so-called Despotate of Epirus to actually bear the title Despote, which was granted to him in 1237 by Manuel Komnenos Dukas [1230-1237], the ruler of the Empire of #Thessalonica. The #Greek word ∆ΕΣΠΟΤΗΣ - Despotes is roughly equivalent to the Latin Dominus and hence means simply Lord. What makes this piece even more fascinating is the fact that the reverse proudly calls Michael #Orthodox, which is undoubtedly a reaction to the tumultuous ecclesiastical history of his realm.

Centrum i #Ioannina med klocktornet som är symbol för sta'n. I bakgrunden reser sig mäktiga berget Mitsekeli. En gång tog det massor av tid för bussen ta sig över det - nu går det snabbt i tunnlar på #Egnatía_odós #Epiros, Greece
