#Op_ed: Manufactured Consensus: How National Dialogue's design threatens #Oromia, multinational federalism
Although Ethiopians broadly agree that inclusive dialogue is essential for lasting peace, the National Dialogue Commission’s (#ENDC) current framework remains deeply flawed, writes Sultan Kassim. He argues that by granting vast regions like Oromia the same minimal voting power as small city administrations, the process mathematically sidelines millions of citizens.
The author explains that Oromia, home to an estimated 35–40% of #Ethiopia’s population, is allocated just 14 of the 211 seats in the Regional Representatives Assembly, giving it only 6.6% of the voting power.
Given the 70% threshold required for decisions, Sultan contends that Oromia’s representation is disproportionately limited relative to its population, leaving it unable to block constitutional changes affecting the federal system or the status of #Finfinne (#Addis_Abeba).
