❄️ WINTER IS COMING — AND ONCE AGAIN IRISH FAMILIES ARE BEING HIT IN THE POCKET. Bord Gáis Energy is increasing electricity unit prices by 9.1% and gas by 10.6% from 9 October. For an average household using both gas and electricity, that works out at approximately €317 EXTRA A YEAR. At the same time, diesel has already gone above €2 a litre in some parts of the country. Food, heating, electricity, fuel and everyday living costs keep increasing, and taxpayers and working families are feeling it. But here's the question we should be asking: 🇮🇪 Why is Ireland still so dependent on imported energy? We already produce natural gas from the Corrib field, yet the vast majority of our gas still has to come through Britain. We also have known oil and gas resources off our south coast, including Barryroe. Yet Ireland stopped issuing new oil and gas exploration licences in 2021, while we continue importing fossil fuels from abroad. Nobody is saying we should abandon renewable energy. We should be investing heavily in wind, solar and other clean energy. But surely energy security has to matter too. Why shouldn't Ireland responsibly examine and develop its own available energy resources during the transition, create Irish jobs, reduce our dependence on foreign supplies and keep more of that money circulating in our own economy? Working people cannot just keep absorbing increase after increase. Ireland needs an energy policy that puts security, affordability and Irish households at the centre of it. 🇮🇪
