I hate awards.
Which is odd, because we just won one!
My brilliant @ChaosTheorySA team have just won an #Eventex Award for the @skift African #Megatrends event we staged in January.
It's one of only 4 African winners out of 1400+ entries from 58 countries, and the only corporate event to be acknowledged on the African continent.
And here's the thing.
It's not "award-winning" because the event was well put together. It was.
Or the singers sung. They did.
Or the guests had name badges, gifts, and food. Tick.
I think it's more important than that.
At the outset, I need to be honest and admit we probably needed our heads read for even attempting a 150-person conference-style event on top of Table Mountain, in the open air, with nothing to get up or down the mountain but a cable car. But thats a different story for another day.
In January, my friend from years past, @AK_MediaMan gave me a call and asked me to help him co-create an event that would make the broader tourism industry sit up and take notice, for something that couldn’t be just another post on a timeline, or a clickable link to a press kit.
The report was really important to the broader tourism industry in Africa, and Altaaf and the Millat Group, with the team at @skift , had a firm belief that the significant opportunity of investing in Africa had to be felt, experienced, and seen first-hand.
And here's the thing. The reality is that traditional “event” attendances are declining as attention spans decrease, and AI is exponentially increasing the sheer volume of content on our timelines.
So what we as an agency do, every day, the “In Real Life” bit, is fast becoming more important than ever, and when events become experiences, they work, really well!
When we asked 150 People to register by 6 am, they all did!
And they experienced Africa like never before, and remembered, and engaged.
Digital can't deliver that feeling, that moment.
AI has no EQ.
You can't deepfake the feeling of sunrise on Table Mountain!
And that’s why I am so proud of this award.
I am thrilled that when the easiest word in events is “Safe”, our clients and partners never flinched because they believed, as we all did, that if we produced something that meant something, the event would deliver the goods.
Not a presentation. A feeling.
To make people feel Africa for what it is and what it can be.
To make them see the opportunity for themselves.
So, this award is, in my opinion, totally justified.
Not for me!
This is an award for brave clients.
True partnerships.
Carefully considered strategies.
And award-winning measurable business results.
Our reach and exposure to industry leaders exceeded all expectations.
Real business conversations were held on top of the mountain as a result of a crazy idea that should never have worked, but did!
Oh, I still hate awards.
But this one feels good for all the right reasons!
And we have a plaque to prove it.
