On March 29, 1867, the British North America Act received Royal Assent. Signed into law by Queen Victoria, the Act created the Dominion of Canada — uniting Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada under a new federal constitution. This was Canada’s legal birth moment. Leaders like John A. Macdonald had spent years negotiating the terms of union. But it was this Act — passed by the British Parliament — that formally brought the country into existence. On July 1, the new Dominion would take effect.
