He and a small circle had begun organizing Black voter registration in a county where no Black citizen had voted in decades. One night, officers including the town's night marshal, came to his door and took him away in his nightclothes for "questioning." His body was found in the Hatchie River three days later. He was buried within HOURS, in haste, without an autopsy. No inquest worth the name. The Justice Department opened a file and quietly closed it in 1942 without a single charge.
