Families are at the heart of our work here at the #FoleyFoundation. To conclude our Father’s Day honors of last week, we acknowledge all the fathers reunited with their families in the past year!
The Foley Foundation celebrates these happy reunions and remain committed to the families still waiting. We look forward to many more homecomings and hope that reunited families enjoyed their Father's Day!

Over the weekend, the #FoleyFoundation celebrated 10 years of freedom for @jrezaian!
Jason was wrongfully detained in Iran for 544 days just because he is a journalist. Since his release, Jason has become a tireless advocate for Americans held hostage and for press freedom around the world.
The Foley Foundation is honored to have Jason as one our advisors helping to make the world safer for Americans traveling abroad and journalists everywhere.

Today, Amy Coyne, Director of Corporate and Community Relations at the #FoleyFoundation, visited Portsmouth High School’s Service-Learning class for junior and senior students. This course enables participants to earn academic credits by linking classroom knowledge to tangible community needs, fostering essential skills such as problem-solving and citizenship. Students collaborate with local non-profit organizations, including the Foley Foundation, volunteering for one hour, three to four days per week.
Special thanks to Service-Learning class teacher Helaine Wemple and current Foley Foundation student volunteer Carter Hancock for allowing the Foley Foundation to share Jim’s Legacy!

At the #FoleyFoundation, we believe no family should face the trauma of a hostage-taking or wrongful detention alone. Every day, we stand with families of Americans unjustly held captive—supporting them, elevating their voices, and pushing for action at the highest levels of government.
This Giving Tuesday, your support strengthens the lifeline we provide to families living through the unthinkable. Together, we can continue pressing for accountability and fight for the return of every American unjustly held captive abroad.
Thank you for standing with them - and with us.

Four years ago on November 15, journalist Danny Fenster was freed from prison in Myanmar after 175 days in detention. The #FoleyFoundation is forever grateful for his return.
The State Department still warns against travel to Myanmar due to the ongoing risk of wrongful detention.

It’s an incredible honor to be named a World Press Freedom Awardee alongside @AlsuKurmasheva for the 2026 James W. Foley Freedom Awards. It is also a profound responsibility. Dozens of Americans remain wrongfully held hostage by foreign governments. We’ll keep shining a light on their plight, especially journalists imprisoned by repressive regimes. State sponsors of wrongful detention must face accountability.
Alsu wouldn’t be a #FreeAlsu today without the @JamesFoleyFund and the valiant @StateSPEHA team. Thanks to them, Alsu rejoined her family in the free world, where we can say and write whatever we believe and fight for everyone else’s right to do the same, no matter their politics or persuasion.
When Alsu was languishing in inhumane conditions in a Russian prison, my daughters and I drew strength and moral courage from the extraordinary Diane Foley @FoleyDi and leaned on the compassionate, steadfast support of the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation. It is therefore especially humbling to be named among past awardees - all people of remarkable bravery and conviction.

Two years ago in prison, my legs, numb and swollen from lack of use, started running. One step turned into a jog, then a run—a spontaneous burst around the tiny perimeter. I wasn't a prisoner. I was alive. Free in motion. Today I'm free to run @JamesFoleyFund Freedom Run.

The #FoleyFoundation’s Tom Durkin and Lauren Walsh joined Juan Arredondo @arrejuan on a panel after a screening of Armed Only with a Camera, about American photojournalist, Brent Renaud, who was ambushed and killed covering the war in Ukraine. The pane addressed the mental and emotional toll of covering traumatic events and how trauma impacts journalists’ well-being directly and shapes the depth, accuracy, and humanity of the stories they share.

A message from Diane Foley:
“I’m feeling deeply grateful for the difference Jim’s spirit of moral courage and goodness is making in the world through the #FoleyFoundation and all the generous people who continue his legacy. Thank you for remembering Jim today and every day” – @FoleyDi

The #FoleyFoundation rejoices at the release today of ten U.S. nationals held hostage by the Maduro regime in Venezuela, including:
Wilbert Castaneda – wrongfully detained for 325 days
Jorge Marcelo Vargas – wrongfully detained for 304 days
Renzo Castillo – wrongfully detained for 299 days
Lucas Hunter – wrongfully detained for 192 days
The foundation supported the families of these captives as they advocated for their loved ones’ freedom by providing operational and strategic support to the @BOFHcampaign. The campaign is a family-led initiative to raise awareness among the American public of specific cases of wrongful detention and to mobilize action that leads to the release of those held in captivity.
Foley Foundation President and Founder Diane Foley @FoleyDi said, “We applaud the unprecedented pace set by the Trump administration in securing the release of Americans wrongfully detained around the world. Today’s release of ten U.S. nationals held captive by the Maduro regime extends that record of success.”
Today’s releases were made possible because of the advocacy of these captives’ families, and the political will and resolve of the administration, particularly @POTUS President Donald Trump; Secretary of State and National Security Advisor @SecRubio Marco Rubio; Special Envoy for Hostage Response @aboehler Adam Boehler; and Special Presidential Envoy for Special Missions @RichardGrenell Richard Grenell.

This past week was David Barnes’s 68th birthday — his 4th in Russian detention. He should not spend another year unjustly detained, and the #FoleyFoundation is asking for your help!
We’re hearing that David’s case is finally starting to get the attention it deserves at the highest rungs of our government, thanks in part to the letter that Ksenia Karelina wrote to @POTUS after she was released. That's on top of reports that Secretary of State @SecRubio spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov yesterday. We have to do everything we can to capitalize on this moment.
Please write to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and ask him to remind Russia that if they want to get back on Trump’s good side, they can start by releasing David Barnes.

The #FoleyFoundation, together with the @McCainInstitute, invite you to an online event including policymakers, advocates, officials, and family members of Americans who were unjustly held captive abroad to commemorate 10 years since the issuance of Presidential Policy Directive 30.
WHEN: Tuesday, June 24, 2025
TIME: 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM EDT
WHERE: Online event
