Not gonna lie - this one was harder to write than I expected. Partly because I saw it a while ago. Mostly because the only note I took was a single sentence: "This was awesome."
I never expected to write anything on X before, and I can only blame myself from the past. That son of a bitch!
Anyway... the film.
You hit play and for a second it feels familiar. Same suit, different tie. Another Dr. No. You think you know where this is going. But then the credits roll and something has quietly, unmistakably shifted in the molecules of the film. This one is suave. This one is confident. These people knew they struck gold and they've loosened their collars and leaned back in the leather chair of cinema history, and whether you like it or not, you are going to relax right there with them.
Connery doesn't wear the suit this time. He is the suit. He has fully metabolized Bond, and everyone around (besides Q) catches his tempo. It works magnificently like a great orchestra.
Once we hit Turkey the whole thing just ignites. The beginning might've felt familiar, but the moment we land in Istanbul we start what is one of the slickest spy films ever made. Pure Hitchcock fever dream.
Now. Three things.
First - Daniela Bianchi. The camera absolutely loves this woman. Totally understandable. I could not take my eyes off her. I don't know what it is with 1960s women, but they just knew how to carry themselves in a way we've since collectively forgotten, and nobody thought to write it down. A massive, seismic upgrade from the first film.
Second - Kerim Bay. Probably the greatest fictional sidekick. The story is great, the McGuffin hunt is genuinely gripping, but Kerim is the reason you're happy to be there. His charisma is so far off the charts. Every single scene with him lands like a gift.
And last but not least - there is Robert Shaw, who plays his version of The Jackal - cold and precise, he delivers a performance so close to perfect that the only thing standing between him and full transcendence is the fact that he does not, at any point during the train fight, turn into a real Jackal. James Bond fighting a massive Werewolf would be simply iconic.
Somewhere in the first act my kebab disappeared. I have no recollection of eating it. I just absorbed it, so don't make my mistake and order two. I had to did it, cause my stomach wanted more. By the time the credits rolled I was hungry no more, but I wanted more adventures. Dr. No simply ended, but FRWL left me offhand.
At that moment, for the first time I genuinely understood what it must've felt like in 1963, but back than people did not know when to expect the next movie. I gave myself 7 days to process and prepare. It felt like a month.
