Favourite Film from 2025: Left-Handed Girl (左撇子女孩)
Shooting entirely with iPhones and directed by Shih-Ching Tsou, 'Left-Handed Girl' is the story of a single mother and her two daughters, who arrive in Taipei to open a small restaurant in the heart of a night market in the Taiwanese capital. Each of them must find a way to adapt.
I highly recommend trying this film out. It's currently available on Netflix.

Favourite Film from 2024: Nosferatu
"Professor, my dreams grow darker. Does evil come from within us, or from beyond?"
The original 'Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror' from 1922 was a silent-film classic but over 100 years later, needed to be told again. Directed by Robert Eggers and inspired by Bram Stoker's novel 'Dracula' (1897), the film stars Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, and Willem Dafoe.
'Nosferatu' tells the story of Thomas Hutter, a real estate agent who travels to Transylvania for a fateful meeting with Count Orlok, a prospective client. In his absence, Hutter's new bride, Ellen, is left under the care of their friends, Friedrich and Anna Harding. Plagued by horrific visions and an increasing sense of dread, Ellen soon encounters an evil force that's far beyond her control.
The Hollywood Reporter's David Rooney praised the direction, screenplay and performances, calling the film "exciting, repulsive and beautiful", and added that "It's thrilling to experience a movie so assured in the way it builds and sustains fear, so hypnotically scary as it grabs you by the throat and never lets go."

The film stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as two lifelong friends who find themselves at an impasse when one abruptly ends their friendship, with severe consequences for both of them. Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan co-star.
'The Banshees of Inisherin' reunites Farrell and Gleeson after McDonagh's directorial debut 'In Bruges' from 2008.

"I don't consider myself to be a particularly ethical person, but I am fair."
Directed by Ridley Scott and based on the 2001 book 'The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed' by Sara Gay Forden. The film follows Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga) and Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver) as their romance transforms into a fight for control of the Italian fashion brand Gucci. Jared Leto, Jeremy Irons, Jack Huston, Salma Hayek and Al Pacino also star.

Favourite Film from 2019: Parasite (기생충)
Directed by Bong Joon Ho, who co-wrote the screenplay with Han Jin-won, 'Parasite' won the Academy Award for Best Picture at the 92nd Academy Awards, becoming the first non-English-language film to do so.
"The film follows a poor family who infiltrate the home and life of a wealthy family. The other members of the poor Kim family see an opportunity when their son starts working for the rich Park family. Soon, they find ways to work within the same household and live a "parasitic" life."
'Parasite' has a very unique storyline and managed to breakout in the west. In 2025, The New York Times ranked it as the best movie of the 21st century so far in a list based on votes by readers, actors, and directors.

Favourite Film from 2018: Shoplifters (万引き家族)
In 2018, while the west was firmly diving into tokenism, identity politics, reimagining canon franchises and a general lack of subtlety in many films, the east kept producing some of the most engaging and subtly powerful movies.
'Shoplifters' is a great example of this. It's a heartfelt dramatic film written, directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda and starring Lily Franky and Sakura Ando. It's about a family that relies on shoplifting to cope with a life of poverty. Kore-eda wrote the screenplay contemplating what makes a family, inspired by reports on poverty and shoplifting in Japan. 'Shoplifters' won a Palme d’Or award and is a satisfying and devastating gem.

Favourite Film from 2017: Dunkirk
Director Christopher Nolan depicts the 'Dunkirk' evacuation of World War II from the perspectives of people on the land, sea, and air. Allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Commonwealth and Empire, and France are surrounded by the German Army and evacuated during a fierce battle.
The film features an ensemble cast including Fionn Whitehead, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jack Lowden, Harry Styles in his feature film debut, Aneurin Barnard, James D'Arcy, Barry Keoghan, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, and Tom Hardy.
'Dunkirk' serves up an emotionally satisfying spectacle, delivered by a writer-director in full command of his craft and brought to life by a gifted ensemble cast that honors the fact-based story.

Favourite Film from 2016: The Handmaiden (아가씨)
"With help from an orphaned pickpocket (Kim Tae-ri), a Korean con man (Ha Jung-woo) devises an elaborate plot to seduce and bilk a Japanese woman (Kim Min-hee) out of her inheritance."
Directed by Park Chan-Wook of whom I'm a fan of. Most notably, he was responsible for the original ‘Oldboy’ and ‘Stoker’, his English-language debut. Park Chan-Wook goes back to his roots with ‘The Handmaiden’ which is an adaptation of Sarah Water’s Victorian crime novel ‘Fingersmith’, only it has been relocated to the backdrop of the Japanese occupation of Korea.

Favourite Film from 2015: The Big Short
Ben Rickert: "If we're right, people lose homes. People lose jobs. People lose retirement savings, people lose pensions. You know what I hate about fucking banking? It reduces people to numbers. Here's a number - every 1% unemployment goes up, 40,000 people die, did you know that?"
"In 2008, Wall Street guru Michael Burry (Christian Bale) realizes that a number of subprime home loans are in danger of defaulting. Burry bets against the housing market by throwing more than $1 billion of his investors' money into credit default swaps. His actions attract the attention of banker Jared Vennett (Ryan Gosling), hedge-fund specialist Mark Baum (Steve Carell) and other greedy opportunists. Together, these men make a fortune by taking full advantage of the impending economic collapse in America."
Based on the 2010 book by Michael Lewis, "The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine" depicted how the 2008 financial crisis was triggered by the United States housing bubble.

Favourite Film from 2014: Wild
"Driven to the edge by the loss of her beloved mother (Laura Dern), the dissolution of her marriage and a headlong dive into self-destructive behavior, Cheryl Strayed (Reese Witherspoon) makes a decision to halt her downward spiral and put her life back together again. With no outdoors experience, a heavy backpack and little else to go on but her own will, Cheryl sets out alone to hike the Pacific Crest Trail, one of the country's longest and toughest through-trails."
Directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, "Wild" was based on the 2012 memoir "Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail" by Cheryl Strayed. The New York Times wrote that Reese Witherspoon, who appears in nearly every frame of the film, portrayed Strayed "with grit, wit and unblinking honesty."

Favourite Film from 2013: Gravity
Matt Kowalski: "So, what do you like about being up here?", Ryan Stone: "The silence."
"Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is a medical engineer on her first shuttle mission. Her commander is veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney), helming his last flight before retirement. Then, during a routine space walk by the pair, disaster strikes: The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Ryan and Matt stranded in deep space with no link to Earth and no hope of rescue. As fear turns to panic, they realize that the only way home may be to venture further into space."
Directed by Alfonso Cuarón, "Gravity" is a technically dazzling film, with panoramas of astronauts tumbling against starfields and floating through space station interiors are very realistic and impactful. "Gravity" emerged as one of the most successful sci-fi films of all-time, and the biggest box office hit of both Sandra Bullock and George Clooney's careers.

Favourite Film from 2012: Skyfall
"James Bond: A gun and a radio. It's not exactly Christmas, is it? Q: Were you expecting an exploding pen? We don't really go in for that anymore."
"When James Bond's (Daniel Craig) latest assignment goes terribly wrong, it leads to a calamitous turn of events: Undercover agents around the world are exposed, and MI6 is attacked, forcing M (Judi Dench) to relocate the agency. With MI6 now compromised inside and out, M turns to the one man she can trust: Bond. Aided only by a field agent (Naomie Harris), Bond takes to the shadows and follows a trail to Silva (Javier Bardem), a man from M's past who wants to settle an old score."
Award winning director Sam Mendes, does a glorious job with "Skyfall", as he helped bring the James Bond franchise, surging back with a smart, sexy, riveting action thriller that qualifies as one of the best 007 films to date.
Audiences loved "Skyfall", it earned $1.109 billion worldwide, and at the time of its release was the highest-grossing film worldwide for Sony Pictures and the second-highest-grossing film of 2012.

Favourite Film from 2011: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
"You will be investigating thieves, misers, bullies. The most detestable collection of people that you will ever meet - my family."
"Disgraced financial reporter Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) finds a chance to redeem his honor after being hired by wealthy Swedish industrialist Henrik Vanger (Christopher Plummer) to solve the 40-year-old murder of Vanger's niece, Harriet. Vanger believes that Harriet was killed by a member of his own family. Eventually joining Blomkvist on his dangerous quest for the truth is Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara), an unusual but ingenious investigator whose fragile trust is not easily won."
Once again, another David Fincher film and more music by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. I prefer this 2011 version over the original 2009 Swedish one. The
"Millennium" book series by author Stieg Larsson, featuring "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo", is also very good.

Favourite Film from 2010: The Social Network
"You are probably going to be a very successful computer person. But you're going to go through life thinking that girls don't like you because you're a nerd. And I want you to know, from the bottom of my heart, that that won't be true. It'll be because you're an asshole."
"In 2003, Harvard undergrad and computer genius Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) begins work on a new concept that eventually turns into the global social network known as Facebook. Six years later, he is one of the youngest billionaires ever, but Zuckerberg finds that his unprecedented success leads to both personal and legal complications when he ends up on the receiving end of two lawsuits, one involving his former friend (Andrew Garfield). Based on the book "The Accidental Billionaires."
Directed by David Fincher, "The Social Network" features music by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, the movie is a riveting and ambitious example of modern filmmaking at its finest.

Favourite Film from 2009: The Hangover
"To a night the four of us will never forget!"
"Two days before his wedding, Doug (Justin Bartha) and three friends (Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis) drive to Las Vegas for a wild and memorable stag party. In fact, when the three groomsmen wake up the next morning, they can't remember a thing; nor can they find Doug. With little time to spare, the three hazy pals try to re-trace their steps and find Doug so they can get him back to Los Angeles in time to walk down the aisle."
With a clever script and hilarious interplay among the cast, The Hangover nails just the right tone of raunchy humor, and the non-stop laughs overshadow any flaw.

"Some men just want to watch the world burn".
"With the help of allies, Lt. Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and DA Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), Batman (Christian Bale) is able to keep a tight lid on crime in Gotham City. But when a young criminal calling himself the Joker (Heath Ledger) suddenly throws the town into chaos, the caped crusader begins to tread a fine line between heroism and vigilantism."
Of the three Christoper Nolan - Batman films, "The Dark Knight" is easily the best. Complex, and unforgettable, it succeeds not just as an entertaining comic book film, but as a richly thrilling crime saga.

Favourite Film from 2007: No Country For Old Men
"What’s the most you ever lost on a coin toss?"
"While out hunting, Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) finds the grisly aftermath of a drug deal. Though he knows better, he cannot resist the cash left behind and takes it with him. The hunter becomes the hunted when a merciless killer named Chigurh (Javier Bardem) picks up his trail. Also looking for Moss is Sheriff Bell (Tommy Lee Jones), an aging lawman who reflects on a changing world and a dark secret of his own, as he tries to find and protect Moss."
Bolstered by powerful lead performances from Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, and Tommy Lee Jones, No Country for Old Men found the Coen brothers mining cinematic gold out of Cormac McCarthy's grim, darkly funny novel.

Favourite Film from 2006: Casino Royale
"Bond: I already have a dinner jacket.
Vesper: There are dinner jackets and then there are dinner jackets; this is the latter. And I need you to look like a man who belongs at that table.
Bond: How... it's tailored?
Vesper: I sized you up the moment we met."
"After earning a licence to kill, secret agent James Bond (Daniel Craig) sets out on his first mission as 007. Bond must defeat a private banker funding terrorists in a high-stakes game of poker at Casino Royale, in Montenegro."
Casino Royale disposes of the silliness and gadgetry that plagued previous James Bond outings. Daniel Craig delivered what fans and critics had been waiting for. Additionally, the high stakes poker game itself unfolds in a way that creates enormous suspense and excitement. These scenes at the card table are so perfectly crafted, the audience is left with even greater anticipation and excitement than many of the action scenes in the film, which are also very good. Factor in a memorable romance and Bond girl, every part of 'Casino Royale' is extraordinarily well-written and draws inspiration from the original Ian Fleming novel.

Favourite Film from 2005: Batman Begins
“It's not who I am underneath, but what I do, that defines me.”
"After witnessing his parents' death, billionaire Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) learns the art of fighting to confront injustice. When he returns to Gotham as Batman, he must stop a secret society that intends to destroy the city."
Batman Begins is just that, the beginning of The Batman in his cinematic incarnation. This is a tale that has never been told before on screen (At least not satisfactorily). It has nothing to do with the previous four “Burton/Schumacher” films that hit theaters between 1989 – 1997. There is no macabre, gothic bizarreness here or silly nonsense to be found. It was a complete restart and much needed reboot of the Warner Bros, Batman movie franchise.
Everything is explained this time around. Why Bruce Wayne is so angry? How did he obtain the skills needed to be Batman? How did he obtain all of his “toys,” including the Bat-suit and Batmobile?
Well, we find out these details, in a realistic and plausible manner. At least as realistic and plausible as a "superhero" film can be. I’ll cut to the chase: I think the Christopher Nolan series, are the best Batman films by far.

Favourite Film from 2004: Sideways
Jack: "If they want to drink Merlot, we're drinking Merlot".
Miles: "No, if anyone orders Merlot, I'm leaving. I am NOT drinking any fucking Merlot!"
Two washouts – a failed novelist (Paul Giamatti) and a horn-dog actor (Thomas Haden Church) dreading his impending marriage, hit California wine country, get wasted and pick up two waitresses (Virginia Madsen and Sandra Oh). Featuring sublime acting, acutely perceptive direction by Alexander Payne, who wrote the model of a script with Jim Taylor. "Sideways" was billed as a comedy, but proves to be a serious and tragic look at how two men struggle to cope with their addictions, immoral inclinations, and their extraordinarily average lives.
