December’s #FishOfTheMonth is the Northern #Pipefish (Syngnathus fuscus). These cute fish are related to seahorses, and, just like the seahorse, the males have a brood pouch where the female lays her eggs for him to fertilize and incubate! #Fishfacts for the #Holidays 🐟 🎄

The November #FishOfTheMonth is the Northern #Snakehead (Channa argus) because this invasive fish would make a perfect break from turkey leftovers! Though it has a pretty snake-like pattern, this fish is a threat to all other fish and many other animals in the #ChesBay. 1/2

Their spawning season occurs in the spring in the bay’s tidal tributaries and then migrates out to the coastal ocean. Some rockfish tagged in the Chesapeake Bay have been recaptured over 1,000 miles away in New England! #FishOfTheMonth #rockfish #stripedbass #ChesBay 2/2

#Rocktober is here so October’s #FishOfTheMonth is the #rockfish, AKA #striper or #stripedbass (Morone saxatilis). #ChesBay is the largest rockfish nursery on the Atlantic Coast! This highly sought-after sportfish feeds over rocky oyster beds, hence the name rockfish. 1/2

The September #FishOfTheMonth is the #hogchoker (Trinectes maculatus). This small, flat fish is a year-round resident of the #ChesBay and a lab favorite! The name comes from farmers that fed this fish to hogs but would choke on the fish’s scales and bones.

CATCH | Well done Ken on catching this lovely bass on our shallow diving white lure 👏

The July #FishOfTheMonth is the #bullshark 🦈 (Carcharhinus leucas) not only because July is the month of the famous #SharkWeek but also because bull sharks are known for traveling far into the #ChesBay! Bull sharks can survive in fresh, brackish, and saltwater! 🌊 1/2
Our #fishofthemonth for Oct is Irish Sea, Celtic Sea, and southwest of Ireland #herring. This depleted stock shows the biomass to be among the lowest levels in the time series (beginning pre-1960) far below all stock size reference points.

Direct fishing of West of Scotland #cod - our #fishofthemonth - is not allowed, due to its poor status. But even though cod is only caught as #bycatch in mixed fisheries of haddock, whiting, and saithe, catches still exceed scientific advice and quotas year after year.

Our #fishofthemonth is North Sea #cod. Like most European cod stocks, it is chronically overfished. Despite a reduction in fishing in past years, its stock size is below #sustainable levels (particularly in the southern #NorthSea). #ClimateChange is also affecting its whereabouts

Yes you guessed, our #fishofthemonth is #CelticSea whiting.
Found all over the #NEAtlantic, adult whiting tend to feed on other small fish like herring and sprat.
Mainly caught in mixed #fisheries, its #discard rates are high due to its relatively low market value.

Quiz time! Which fish is this: cod, herring, or whiting? 🧐
Find out more facts about our #fishofthemonth later today. 👀 #EndOverfishing

Our #fishofthemonth for June is western Baltic #cod. @ICES_ASC scientists assess this fish population as being at a historically low level, well below safe biological limits. There is only one last refuge for it: the Sound between 🇩🇰 and 🇸🇪

To coincide with the release yesterday of scientific advice for Baltic Sea fish stocks, for May our #fishofthemonth is eastern Baltic #cod. An iconic species, it plays a key role in the #BalticSea ecosystem both environmentally and commercially #EndOverfishing

#DYK even in the remote #Arctic, we find overfished stocks? For April, our #fishofthemonth is NE Arctic #Capelin. Like other small fish of the open sea, its abundance varies greatly from year to year. This, along with #overfishing, puts the population at times below safe limits.

From this month on, we will be profiling one fish population per month that is amongst the most overfished in #NEAtlantic waters. For March, check out some facts about our first fish #CelticSeaCod #fishofthemonth #EndOverfishing
