“The challenge thrown to us at Gary… [is] to take up the role of harbingers of true justice.” #Nationtime ends with fists in the crowd—freeze-framed. Does the documentary freeze and frame the revolutionary spirit of the 1972 National Black Political Convention? #FreedomFlicks

As #Nationtime progresses, the crowd of the 1972 National Black Political Convention noticeably thins. Does such imagery metaphorically highlight that change takes stamina? That movements must move forward even as the investment of a multitude waxes and wanes? #FreedomFlicks

“You are the promise because you tell us what you need!” So speaker Amiri Baraka tells the 1972 National Black Political Convention. He then dismisses a dissenting delegate from Michigan. #Nationtime captures tensions between activist leadership & its followers. #FreedomFlicks

#Nationtime features musicians at the 1972 National Black Political Convention against an Amiri Baraka poem: “We are strange in a way because we know who we are. Black beings passing through a tortured passage of flesh.” Behind the music’s beat lies pain. #FreedomFlicks

We see actor Harry Belafonte in a fur coat in #Nationtime against this Langston Hughes verse: “Because my feet Are gay with dancing You do not know I die?” Is this a gesture to the pain of being seen as a benign representative of an oppressed community? #FreedomFlicks

“You understand, but maybe you don’t.“ An activist pushes attendees at the 1972 National Black Political Convention to consider their last names’ slave origins. Away from the spotlit podium, historical lines of oppression may be more muddled, more insidious. #FreedomFlicks

“From the ruins of race hate, there is a bomb!... we are a mighty nation!” Reverend Jesse James references martyrs past before speaking about forming a Black political party. #Nationtime gestures to an explosive utopia that could have been (could be?) possible. #FreedomFlicks

“When will we get paid for the work that we have already done?” As Jesse Jackson asks for reparations in #Nationtime, the camera cuts to the crowd. A fist juts up into the air. From a righteously angry multitude, a revolutionary spirit springs. #FreedomFlicks

When the Reverend Jesse Jackson takes the stage of the 1972 National Black Political Convention, he speaks of #Nationtime. The camera catches him at a low angle, surrounded by microphones. The media amplifies struggling fighters, making them larger-than-life. #freedomflicks

Sidney Poitier’s voice narrates over #Nationtime, speaking about the unity of Black America. His echoey voice suggests the ways in which the Black struggle may need to be heralded by an ethereal star, by a Black Masculinity sanctioned by Hollywood. #FreedomFlicks

‘We have to write and document our #history.’ #ErykahBadu calls for Black subjects to be their own scribes as we see images captured by white Swedish journalists. #TheBlackPowerMixtape thus ends with a reminder that we be aware of the limits of its own eye. #FreedomFlicks
