🇧🇭⛓️🚨 Prisoners Affairs Authority - Bahrain: Court of Appeal Upholds Acceptance of Mr. Ebrahim Sharif's Appeal and Replaces Prison Sentence with Alternative Penalty
#Ebrahim_sharif #FreeSharif
The Court of Appeal today, Tuesday, February 17, 2026, upheld the acceptance of the appeal submitted by Mr. Ebrahim Sharif, and decided to replace the six-month imprisonment sentence with an alternative penalty requiring weekly attendance at the Alternative Penalties Center, along with a pledge not to appear on TV channels that "offend Arab countries."
Sharif had been detained on November 12, 2025, immediately upon his arrival at Bahrain International Airport, coming from Lebanon, on the background of statements he made in which he criticized the policies of "Israel," called on Arab peoples to boycott normalization and resist the occupation, and also criticized what he described as the silence of some Arab regimes regarding the ongoing events in Palestine and Lebanon.
The Court of Appeal's decision came after it considered the appeal submitted against the initial ruling, where the court saw fit to replace the custodial sentence with alternative measures, while maintaining the obligations and conditions stipulated in the amended ruling.

Bahrain opposition leader imprisoned over criticism of kingdom's relations with Israel
——
Bahraini opposition figure Ebrahim Sharif was sentenced to six months in prison and fined $530 Thursday after criticizing the kingdom’s relations with Israel. Sharif, a prominent left-wing activist and head of the National Democratic Action Society (Wa’ad), has been detained since November on charges of spreading false news on social media and making offensive remarks against Arab states. The sentence stemmed from an interview in which he condemned Arab governments for failing to support Palestinians and for normalizing ties with Israel.
Rights groups condemned the move, calling it a “chilling precedent” that criminalizes free expression and dissent. Sharif has faced arrest, interrogation, or prosecution ten times since the 2011 pro-democracy protests in Bahrain, during which he emerged as a leading secular leftist voice. Activists say his sentencing reflects a broader crackdown on pro-Palestinian and pro-democracy advocacy in the kingdom.
Bahraini officials, including Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, have overseen ongoing abuses in Bahrain's prisons despite the country being a signatory to the UN Convention Against Torture, prompting calls for accountability and potential US sanctions against officials implicated in human rights violations.

🇧🇭⛓️ Prisoners Affairs Authority - Bahrain: Postponement of Verdict Announcement in the Case of Leader in Wa'ad Society, Mr. Ebrahim Sharif, to December 29, 2025

The court held a session yesterday, Thursday, December 25, 2025, to consider the case of the Leader in Wa'ad Society, Mr. Ebrahim Sharif, in which the verdict was scheduled to be announced. However, the Public Prosecution submitted a memorandum to the court, following which it decided to postpone the verdict announcement, setting a new session for December 29, 2025, to enable the defense team to respond to the Public Prosecution's memorandum.
This judicial development comes amid escalating international solidarity with Mr. Ebrahim Sharif, as the "Danish-Bahraini Solidarity Committee" launched a solidarity petition titled "Freedom for the Struggler Ebrahim Sharif," signed by approximately 169 Danish figures.
The list of signatories included Danish human rights defenders, politicians, intellectuals, along with representatives of civil society organizations and communities, who denounced the continued detention by the Bahraini authorities of the former Secretary-General of the National Democratic Action Society "Wa'ad," considering his detention arbitrary and his continued detention pending trial on the basis of his political and intellectual stances.
The signatories affirmed that Ebrahim Sharif is one of the most prominent national, pan-Arab, and international personalities defending democratic freedoms and human rights, known for his steadfast positions in solidarity with the causes of oppressed peoples worldwide, foremost among them the Palestinian cause, in addition to his public and direct criticisms of the ruling regime's policies in Bahrain, especially regarding the systematic restriction of freedom of opinion and expression.
The petition indicated that his arrest falls within the context of an extended series of grave violations practiced by the Bahraini authorities against political opponents and human rights activists, through muzzling voices and stifling public freedoms, alongside the continuation of its policies, relations, and agreements with the Zionist entity.

🇧🇭⛓️🚨 Prisoners Affairs Authority - Bahrain: Prosecution Demands Maximum Penalty Against Political Leader Ebrahim Sharif in His Trial on Charges of Insulting a Foreign State ("lsrael")

A trial session for Bahraini political leader Ebrahim Sharif was held this morning, Thursday (November 27, 2025), before the specialized court. This follows the case filed against him on charges of intentionally broadcasting false news and publicly insulting a foreign state ("lsrael"), in addition to making media statements described as "offensive" and "inciting."
During the session, Sharif denied all charges against him. He was accompanied by seven lawyers who submitted a request to obtain a copy of the case documents and presented a CD they claimed contained evidence proving their client's innocence. They demanded he be given a deadline to respond to the accusations, in addition to requesting his release due to his health conditions and the absence of justifications for his continued detention.
In contrast, the Public Prosecution submitted written and oral pleadings emphasizing the seriousness of the defendant's statements, demanding that the court impose the maximum penalty prescribed by law against him. The prosecution relied on what it described as verbal and technical evidence, including the testimony of an investigative officer and a video clip showing Sharif on a media channel making statements the prosecution considered "offensive and a clear insult to a foreign state, 'lsrael'."
The session concluded with the court setting December 3 as the date for hearing the defense's pleadings, while the defendant remains detained until the next session.
Sharif was arrested on November 12, 2025, immediately upon his arrival at Bahrain International Airport from Lebanon, following his participation in a political conference there.
