“The reduction in energy usage, carbon footprint, and costs are all great benefits of the Freezer Challenge,” shared Paula Milliken, ecotoxicologist at Cefas (Centre for Environment, Fisheries, and Aquaculture Science), one of 2025's #FreezerChallenge winners. “Better-organized freezers make them significantly more user-friendly and save time looking for what you need. Also, turning up ULT freezers so they are not working at maximum capacity will increase their lifespan,” she added.

The Freezer Challenge is a free, friendly, virtual competition running from January to June, designed to help labs optimize their cold storage practices while making a measurable impact. Here’s how to get started:
1: Make a Plan and Sign Up: Explore strategies to optimize your lab’s cold storage. Review best practices and consider what is feasible for your lab. Sign up and access resources to get started here: https://t.co/99PoegxeDD
2. Build Your Team: Enlist your colleagues and lab mates to work with you in Freezer Challenge actions. Work together to implement the actions you’ve chosen and make a collective impact.
3. Take Action: Adopt measures like defrosting freezers, organizing inventories, and optimizing temperatures. Record your actions on the provided scoresheet to monitor your impact and compete effectively.
