#frontlinefocus Tajik President Emomali Rahmon arrives in Beijing on May 11 for a four-day state visit. Against this backdrop, one bilateral project worth highlighting is the China–Tajikistan Highway, also known as the Pamir Highway.
Originally built in the 1940s, the highway stretches more than 1,000 km from Dushanbe to Karasu on the China-Tajikistan border. It is vital for Tajikistan's transport and external links. Over time, however, natural disasters and neglect left much of the route in disrepair.
In 2009, China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) began reconstruction and expansion work. The first phase of the project was completed in 2013.
In September 2022, work began on the second phase. It covers 92.3 kilometers while tackling the Pamirs' most formidable terrain head-on.
The project includes:
• 2 tunnels
• 14 bridges
• 5 avalanche galleries
• widening roads from 4m to 12m
On March 16, 2025, the key No.1 Tunnel of Phase II was fully connected. The No.2 Tunnel was completed on September 7, marking another major milestone toward the project's full completion, targeted for September 20, 2026.
Once completed, travel time between Dushanbe and Tajikistan's Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region is expected to fall from around 5 hours to just 1.5 hours.

#FrontlineFocus: Beyond medals — Stories from 2026 Winter Olympics
February 18 saw a major breakthrough for Team China 🇨🇳 at this year's Winter Olympics – with two unforgettable wins that extend beyond the medals:
🏅Su Yiming — Birthday gold & a comeback story
Su Yiming made history by winning gold in men's snowboard slopestyle on his 22nd birthday – a medal, birthday celebration, and Chinese New Year gift all in one. He delivered a stunning first run of 82.41 points, holding off top contenders to secure the title.
It was China's first gold medal at the Milan–Cortina Games, and the country's first Olympic gold ever in men’s snowboard slopestyle.
Notably, Su had already made history in 2022 – winning silver in slopestyle at the 2022 Winter Olympics, China’s first Olympic medal in the event. He also claimed gold in big air in Beijing.
Between the two Olympics, Su endured injuries and setbacks. Reflecting on his journey, he said his growth over the past four years is reflected most in his stronger mentality and resilience – a champion rebuilt not just physically, but mentally.
Adding to his 2026 campaign, Su had earlier secured a bronze in big air.
🏅Xu Mengtao — A fifth Olympics, a defended crown
At 35 years old, Xu Mengtao successfully defended her Olympic title in women's freestyle skiing aerials, becoming one of the few athletes to repeat as Olympic champion in the event.
She delivered a spectacular final jump scoring 112.90 points, sealing victory in her fifth Olympic appearance – a rare testament to longevity in a sport known for explosive power and high injury risk.
Her win was also part of a strong Chinese showing, with teammate Shao Qi capturing bronze🥉with 101.90 points, underscoring China's depth in aerials.

#FrontlineFocus Milano Cortina 2026 Opens with “Harmony” Across Italy. Which is your favorite moment?
The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games kicked off on Thursday night at Milan’s San Siro Stadium, delivering an Opening Ceremony that redefined Olympic storytelling. Under the theme “Harmony,” the ceremony combined art, technology and live connections across multiple host locations, highlighting Italy’s cultural heritage, contemporary creativity and the balance between cities and mountains.
Here are the unforgettable moments from the Opening Ceremony:
🎨 A Ceremony Painted in Three Colors
Three giant paint tubes in red, yellow and blue descended from the stadium roof. The primary colors, symbolizing creativity and infinite possibility, set the visual tone. A grand festive parade unfolded around the colors
🎭 Opera Legends Join the Celebration
Italy’s iconic composers Verdi, Puccini and Rossini were brought to life. The masters appeared in playful dance performances, blending classical culture with modern stage expression.
🌍 One Parade, Multiple Cities
Athletes did not gather in a single stadium. Competitors in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Livigno and Predazzo took part in simultaneous entrance ceremonies at local venues, turning Italy’s geography into a shared Olympic stage.
🎹 Lang Lang Returns to the Olympic Stage
Eighteen years after his last Olympic appearance, Lang Lang returned and performed the Olympic Hymn during the raising of the Olympic flag. The show was joined by Italian mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli, and accompanied by the La Scala Theatre Children’s Choir.
🔥 Two Cities, One Olympic Flame
For the first time, the Olympic cauldron was lit simultaneously in two cities.
📍 Milan – Arco della Pace
Alpine skiing legends Deborah Compagnoni and Alberto Tomba lit the main cauldron. The design drew inspiration from Leonardo da Vinci’s geometric knot
📍 Cortina d’Ampezzo – Piazza Angelo Dibona
Italian alpine skier Sofia Goggia ignited the second cauldron.
With harmony as its opening note, Milano Cortina 2026 set the stage for a Winter Games that stretches beyond one city — and speaks to the world.

Who remembers the GOOD OLD DAYS when Japan 🇯🇵 was in charge of Taiwan 👀
🇨🇳: NEVER AGAIN ‼️
“#FrontlineFocus: Economic Extraction in Taiwan Under Japanese Rule (1895–1945)
The Taiwan region was under Japanese colonial rule from 1895 to 1945. During this period, Japan implemented economic policies that channeled Taiwan’s land, labor, and resources toward the needs of the imperial economy. Key features included:
1. Land and agriculture
Japan conducted large-scale land surveys and restructured ownership to integrate Taiwan’s agriculture into the imperial economy.
Sugarcane, rice and tea were produced mainly for export, with farmers receiving low prices while profits went to the empire. Industries such as salt production were placed under strict colonial control to supply Japan and its territories.
2. Industry and resources
Japanese monopolies managed key industries and economic sectors in Taiwan.
Timber and minerals—including gold, silver and copper—were exported to Japan for processing, with the island’s natural resources directed to support Japan’s industrial development.
3. Trade imbalances
Trade was largely structured to serve Japan’s interests, with export decisions and profits controlled by the colonial authorities.
Taiwan functioned primarily as a supplier of raw materials and a market for Japanese goods.
4. Finance and monopolies
In 1899, Japan established the Bank of Taiwan, replacing local currency and centralizing financial control.
State monopolies on camphor, tobacco, salt, alcohol and opium concentrated profits in Japanese hands and tightly regulated key sectors of Taiwan’s economy.”

#FrontlineFocus: Greenhouse gas emissions from waste
♻️ Did you know?
• Waste management generates about 3–5% of global #greenhouse gas (#GHG) emissions.
• #Methane (CH₄) from #landfills is a major source — it's over 28 times more potent than CO₂.
• Food loss and waste account for 8-10% of annual global greenhouse gas emissions.
🇨🇳 China in Action
• Cities at or above the prefecture level aim for 100% waste sorting and #recycling coverage by 2025.
• Waste-to-#energy: China has 1,010 incineration enterprises (~half the global total) converting waste to electricity.
• Zero-waste cities: 113 prefecture-level cities + 8 special regions are piloting 3,700+ projects (community sorting, industrial by-product recovery), with >1 trillion yuan (about $140 billion) invested.
💡 Takeaway: Reducing, reusing and recycling waste can cut #emissions and turn discard into #resources.

#FrontlineFocus: Nepal's Unrest — What's Happening and Why It Turned Violent
Nepal's prime minister has resigned following a wave of violent protests, with at least 22 confirmed dead, and around 200 injured. Here’s all you need to know:
👉What just happened?
-Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned on Sept 9, 2025.
-Protesters set fire to the parliament building in #Kathmandu, filling the sky with thick black smoke, and clashed with police.
-Government buildings and politicians' homes were attacked across the country.
👉How did it all start?
The unrest began after the government banned 26 social media platforms — including #WhatsApp, #Instagram, and #Facebook — saying they hadn't registered with #Nepal's Ministry of Communication and IT.
Critics called it an attempt to silence an anti-corruption movement. Under pressure, the government repealed the ban on Monday night.
👉Who is protesting?
The protesters are mostly young people, identifying themselves as Gen Z. The label has now become a rallying symbol across the movement.
👉What do they want?
Their demands are simple but powerful: Free access to social media (now restored). An end to what they describe as “corrupt practices” in government.
🔍What's next?
With the prime minister’s resignation and protests still spreading, Nepal's political future remains uncertain.
