Today @EP_ForeignAff and @EP_Development adopted the position on #GlobalEurope: 63 in favour, 27 against, 5 abstentions.
As @ECRGroup @EP_ForeignAff shadow rapporteur, I’ve been working on this file for months. A good number of our proposals made it into the text.
What I’m most glad about is conditionality. It’s no longer just a nebulous thing : there is now concrete wording to suspend funding when partners backslide on democracy and the rule of law, or refuse to take back their own nationals (migrant returns regulation). EU money should also not end up with companies or owners who work against our interests.
The text also finally says plainly that Europe’s interests are a priority of our external action. They are not something to tiptoe around.
Some of our initial reservations have remained in the text throughout these months of work, and I hope they’ll be addressed in one way or another in the trilogues.
