With $GLDT the #GoldDAO SNS brought an incredibly interesting opportunity to the $ICP ecosystem. An ICRC1 token fully backed by - and redeemable for - real world gold in an audited vault! Saving in gold has never been easier!
The only issue was that, due to high transaction fees (0.1 GLDT, currently about $0.11) it only really enables the “hodl” (saving) use case.
This may be reasonable, but the result is that the token is unsuitable for DeFi, where executing many small trades is the norm for many products (and the trading profile for many traders).
As an example, #TacoDAO recently published a due diligence report on Gold DAO and GLDT where they were forced to concede that the transaction fee disqualifies it from inclusion in the portfolio, since the rebalancer continuously performs many small transactions to balance the assets in the portfolio.
This is why the introduction of $sGLDT from @icBITCORN is so exciting! By wrapping GLDT 1:1 with a sGLDT token that has a much smaller transaction fee (0.00001 sGLDT), putting gold in Taco’s portfolio - and a host of other DeFi and trading scenarios - becomes viable!
It’s great for GLDT - this way, both the DeFi and the hodl use cases become unlocked, the attractiveness of buying GLDT increases, and more GLDT can become deployed in the world. Instead of just being able to hodl GLDT in your wallet, you can now also hodl it in a rebalancing portfolio, or other DeFi use case, by wrapping it in sGLDT.
I am extremely excited about unlocking DeFi for gold, mirroring how $ckBTC unlocks DeFi for $BTC! And I can’t wait to see gold in the Taco portfolio!
