Today I introduce #MachineLearning in my #DataAnalytics and #Geostatistics course. I’m completely stoked to help demystify ML by discussing training and tuning, the bias-variance trade-off, the risk of overfitting, and how to build models that actually generalize. Engineers ready for #DataScience! Stoked!
Yesterday in my #DataAnalytics and #Geostatistics class we learned how to calculate a variogram! 📈
We walked through key concepts like range, nugget effect, and how we quantify spatial continuity. Then I introduced the search template required when working with irregularly sampled spatial data. 🧭
After that we opened my interactive #Python dashboard and calculated an experimental variogram together, experimenting with unit lag distance, azimuth, lag and azimuth tolerance, and bandwidth. 🐍💻
I am always stoked when the class can explore these ideas hands-on and see the variogram calculation in real time!

This week in my #DataAnalytics and #Geostatistics course we jump into bivariate statistics! 📊📈
After introducing Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients, I unleash my interactive #Python @matplotlib demo.
Here’s the fun part…
🎲 1,000 completely random data points.
No real relationship. Everything looks clean.
Then…
💥 Add ONE outlier.
Suddenly the Pearson correlation coefficient = 1.0 🤯
Perfect correlation… from pure randomness + one mischievous point!
Meanwhile, the Spearman rank correlation just smiles and says:
“Hold my borscht.” 🥣😎
Boom 💪 — robust to the outlier.
It’s such a powerful visual lesson: Sensitivity vs. robustness. Why we must always look at the data 👀

Because of my Fall 2024 sabbatical, I haven’t taught geostatistics for almost two years—and I’ve really missed it. I miss the wonder of explaining these ideas for the first time:
