Have used #gettext in #php, #javascript, #rubyonrails. And its companion #poedit makes a perfect team.
Using that wrongly, this developer(s) had to overdo all these things to achieve L10N and confuse all translators too. And in the end, devs+translators will be more sad/angry at #gettext. They just used a superb lib wrongly.
