He was never marketed as a superstar. He rarely appeared on film posters as the main attraction. Yet for nearly five decades, Om Prakash was one of the most loved and respected actors in Hindi cinema. Whether he played a strict father, a comic uncle, a greedy relative, a drunk, a villain, or a heartbreaking tragic character, he brought a level of authenticity that often made audiences remember him long after the hero was forgotten. Born as Om Prakash Chibber on 19 December 1919 in Lahore, he developed a passion for music, theatre, and acting from a young age. As a boy, he even performed female roles in local Ramleela productions because of his expressive acting abilities. Before entering films, he joined All India Radio in 1937 for a salary of just ₹25 per month. There he became famous as a radio personality known as "Fateh Din." His voice became so popular across Punjab that people eagerly waited for his broadcasts. One day, while entertaining guests at a wedding, filmmaker Dalsukh Pancholi noticed his talent and offered him a role in a film. Om Prakash accepted and received only ₹80 for the job. It was a small beginning, but it changed his life forever. The Partition of India forced him to leave Lahore. Like millions of others, he had to rebuild his life from scratch. He moved to Delhi and later Bombay, carrying little more than hope and determination. What followed was one of the most remarkable careers in Bollywood history. Over the next several decades, Om Prakash appeared in more than 300 films and worked alongside almost every major star of Indian cinema—Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Jeetendra, Vinod Khanna, and many others. His unforgettable performances came in films such as Padosan, Pyar Kiye Jaa, Gopi, Chupke Chupke, Julie, Zanjeer, Gol Maal, Namak Halaal, Sharaabi, Loafer, Amar Prem, Chameli Ki Shaadi, and countless others. One of the most famous incidents of his career came during the making of Gopi. Dilip Kumar later admitted that Om Prakash's performance was so powerful that it genuinely intimidated him. Dilip Kumar reportedly said that Gopi was one of the rare films where he feared another actor might overshadow him. Another reason audiences loved Om Prakash was his versatility. He could make an entire theatre laugh with a single expression and then break hearts in the very next scene. Few actors could switch between comedy and emotion so effortlessly. His chemistry with Amitabh Bachchan became legendary in films like Namak Halaal and Sharaabi. As "Daddu" in Sharaabi, Om Prakash delivered one of the finest supporting performances of the 1980s and became a favorite among a new generation of moviegoers. Apart from acting, he also produced films including Jahan Ara and Sanjog, proving that his contribution to cinema extended far beyond performing in front of the camera. Despite immense success, Om Prakash remained known in the industry as a humble and warm-hearted individual who treated colleagues with respect and never behaved like a star. In his final years, health problems began troubling him. He suffered a major heart attack and was rushed to Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital. A second heart attack followed, leaving him in a coma from which he never recovered. On 21 February 1998, Om Prakash passed away at the age of 78. His death marked the end of an era, but his legacy remains untouched. Many actors became stars. Very few became institutions. Om Prakash belonged to that rare category of performers whose presence alone could elevate an ordinary scene into something unforgettable. Even today, decades after his passing, Bollywood fans continue to smile at his comedy, admire his acting, and remember him as one of the greatest character actors Indian cinema has ever produced.
