@2aHistory @GodzillacusRex I'd also add the increased rhetoric from gun control in general. They made ARs - previously a niche market - into forbidden fruit, then vilified them. And the more the general political vitriol increased, the more social tension we see in media and in public.

“Were you ever threatened with a gun?”
This student came to my class in Chicagoland.
She was doing great…until I put a gun in her hand.
When I handed it to her, she began to shake and her breathing became shallow.
The took the gun back, cleared it and set it down.
When I put my arms around her, she started crying.
I asked what happened, and she shared that a few years ago, her ex-husband had held a gun to her head and threatened her life.
Recently, she decided she never wanted to be a victim again, decided it was time to learn how to use a firearm herself, and registered for my class.
The trauma attached to her experience almost stopped her, but I wasn’t going to let that happen.
We talked for a few minutes about what had happened.
I told her I was there to support her though the entire process and that I wouldn’t let her fail.
Not only did she pass her Illinois state CCL qualification, when we returned to the classroom after range time, she was willing to share her entire horrific abuse story for the first time publicly with the rest of the class.
There were lots of tears, hugs, and a prayer circle to support her in her healing process.
As she was leaving class at the end of the day she smiled, gave me a big hug, and told me she was ready to continue her training so she could take back her power and learn to comfortably carry everyday.
It’s one thing to teach people state laws and how to pull a trigger.
Helping women find the courage and strength inside themselves to overcome trauma and fear so they can protect themselves is completely different.
This is how we #armthewomen with education, CONFIDENCE and self-defense.
P.S.
Her willingness to share her story gave strength to another student in the class that is being abused to come to me asking for help to get away from her situation.
You never know how your story can impact the lives of others.
Never be afraid or embarrassed to share it.
