#GPT4o will be an interesting test of whether high performing emotional 'intuition' actually requires a slight #hallucinatory tendency to be built in. Previous versions of GPT-4 seemed to make progress on ironing out hallucinations, but as a by-product also seemed to produce somewhat dry responses - creative flare slightly suppressed, impressive but somewhat narrow-channel brainstorming, and very wooden emotive evocation. The upside was better #reliability and #consistency vs other models - great for the business /#corporate use-case. Then #Opus came along. Tremendous creative impetus... took #brainstorming and ideation way outside the bounds of GPT-4 constraints. We got incredible poetry, theorizing and outright conceptual innovation, extending to full blown highly textured #simulations (see @websim_ai for simulated internet for eg). These traits allowed Opus to dance around GPT-4 in terms of world-crafting and the initial (stress initial) phases of problem solving. Ability to reify convincing personalities is also impressive. But alongside these strengths I've also noted Opus has a prominent tendency to hallucinate (it'll invent document references liberally for example). It seems like there's a clear tradeoff at work... and I wonder if it's an inescapable tradeoff within the bounds of any one model. Now GPT-4o arrives on the scene exhibiting notably more personality than its predecessors - which is of course necessary to support the #rapport-building we've seen in the #voice interaction demos. But I've also seen people reporting that some degree of hallucination is back - pure making stuff up. And all this has me wondering if emotion, creative impulse, and particularly #charisma are all fundamentally predicated on a capacity or tendency to hallucinate - not in the sense of a perceptual distortion, but in the sense of synthesizing possibilities, ideas and perspectives that transcend the "immediately observable" status quo. Anecdotally we know that many prominent charismatic individuals fit this broad pattern. #SteveJobs was known for his 'reality distortion field', #Einstein for his 'Gedankenexperiments' and many a philosopher, playwright, prophet, artist and leader for their capacity to help us surface new options, new ways of looking at the world, and imagining new worlds. Now - here's the thing! In humans the capacity to envision beyond the status quo likely involves a (complex) interplay between large-scale brain networks, particularly the #defaultmode network (involved in self-generated thought, mental simulation and counterfactual reasoning) and the #saliencenetwork (which orients attention to meaningful stimuli). Charismatic individuals may have particularly adept crosstalk between these networks, enabling them to fluidly combine far-flung concepts into novel but relevant and workable ideas. If #AI is going to interact with palpable charisma and creativity, BUT ALSO stay grounded in facts when necessary (for reliability and consistency), I think they're going to need an architecture that mirrors the human brain's dialectical interplay between the default mode network and the salience network. This isn't MoE... it's something slightly different, akin to a 2-hemisphere construct with 2 sub-entities talking to one another, sometimes countering /buffering /bootstrapping /collaborating as necessary to strike an effective balance between creative status quo breaking charisma, and reliable real-world coherence. Charisma of course thrives on the edge, in the liminal space between order (status quo) and uncertainty /chaos (the future possible). Finding that edge is an optimization challenge.
