Over 5.5M older persons in India, live with life-limiting and chronic conditions, yet more than 80% of those in need, have no access to palliative care.
Cancer is a part of a wider spectrum of life-limiting conditions, that require equal focus. This #WorldCancerDay, we highlight how access to palliative care ensures holistic care, surrounded by family and compassion. Health is complete physical, mental, emotional and social well-being, and true care goes beyond prescriptions, with dignity, emotional support, and human connections. Palliative care and geriatric care are not separate, meaningful elder care must include relief from pain, support for daily living, and quality of life.
HelpAge India runs home based palliative care for elderly in rural communities, providing screening, assessment and symptom management, by trained health professionals. It also provides assistive care to help elderly in their daily living activities. Training of caregivers within the family & community, forms an essential part of the programme, strengthening community support, ensuring elderly live their later years with dignity.
Ageing with dignity, needs care, that is not just longer, but better.
