The brightest heaven of invention,
A kingdom for a stage, princes to act
And monarchs to behold the swelling scene!
Then should the warlike Harry, like himself,
Assume the port of Mars...”

Like @JulesHumphrys I was horrified at the sight of the future Henry V with an arrow sticking out of his face at the Battle of Shrewsbury in 1403 😮 (or we may just be horrified by the state of Henry’s hair cut) #1403battlefield #battleofshrewsbury #henryv #medievalcastle

OTD in 1386 - Birth of Henry of Monmouth (later #HenryV.) Henry achieved the unthinkable for a King of England, with the 1420 Treaty of Troyes recognising him as the heir & regent of France. He would have become king of both countries if he hadn’t predeceased the French King Charles VI in 1422.
Henry was the eldest child of Henry of Bolingbroke (later #HenryIV) & his first wife Mary de Bohun. Bolingbroke was a renowned tournament champion & crusader, who had four sons, one of the many contrasts between him & the childless #RichardII.
Henry was born at the start of his father’s rise to political prominence in England, when Bolingbroke’s own father, John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, was away pursuing his second wife Constanza’s claim to Castile.
In 1399 Bolingbroke deposed Richard II & was ‘elected’ King of England in his place by Parliament. Richard was murdered in 1400 (likely by starvation) after a failed plot to restore him & kill Bolingbroke & his sons. Henry lived initially at Oxford under the care of his half-uncle Bishop Henry Beaufort, learning to read & write in English. (NB. he was the first recorded post Conquest monarch to do so.)
Henry soon became embroiled in defending his family’s claim to the throne. Aged sixteen he played a key role in helping his father win the 1403 Battle of Shrewsbury against Henry Hotspur Percy & was almost killed by an arrow in his left cheekbone, which left him permanently disfigured. He had uneasy relationship with his father for the remainder of Henry IV’s reign, disagreeing on policy & wanting a bigger role than the King would allow him.
After his accession in 1413 Henry sought to strengthen the Lancastrian dynasty by unifying England & healing the remaining divisions. One of his first acts as King was to order the reburial of Richard II in the tomb the deposed king had designed in Westminster Abbey, signalling a clear break with the past. His decision to pursue England’s claim to the crown of France was a natural extension of this policy.
This is because medieval England was a state & society built for war. Unless the nobility were kept occupied fighting overseas as the most successful Kings of England had done (Edward I with his conquest of Wales & Scotand, Edward III in France & Castile) it wouldn’t be long before the nobles caused trouble at home. This wasn’t necessarily because the nobility were inherently unruly more that chivalry as a system depended on the achievement of martial glory & opportunities needed to be provided for both this & the enrichment of younger sons.
Henry realised this essential truth. His father had made grand speeches about invading France, but never followed through on the objective. Henry, despite his depiction in Shakespeare, was no orator, but he didn’t need to be. His actions spoke for him. His 1415 invasion of France, culminated in victory at the Battle of Agincourt, all the more remarkable because the English had been on the brink of defeat. Henry built on this through a combination of military conquest & diplomacy to achieve a position of political supremacy within France by 1420.
Before his premature death aged only 35, Henry achieved recognition as the heir to the French throne, setting the stage for his infant son Henry VI to become King of England & France when the previous French King Charles VI died in October 1422.
Henry VI’s accession aged only nine months is often cited as an important factor in his later abject failure as King. But this is a misreading of the contemporary political situation. The problems started once Henry VI reached adulthood & failed to ever fully assume the responsibilities expected of an adult King, relying instead on a series of close to perform the role for him. This resulted in factionalism, undoing his father’s unifying work, & creating the conditions for the outbreak of the #WarsoftheRoses.

OTD in 1435 - Death of John, Duke of Bedford, younger brother of #HenryV & Regent of France for his nephew #HenryVI. The #WarsoftheRoses & Henry VI’s failure as King are sometimes explained by him inheriting two kingdoms as an infant, but this ignores the fact that he had able men such as Bedford to rule for him & the greatest problems only started once Henry reached his majority.
Henry V had wanted Bedford to be Lord Protector of England for his young son, & for Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy to be Regent of France. However, Philip scuppered this plan by refusing to serve, forcing Bedford to step in as Regent of France, with his Lord Protector responsibilities in England having to be delegated to his younger brother Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester.
Bedford continued his late brother’s conquest of France & captured Meulan. On 17 August 1424 he achieved a great victory over the French & their Scots allies at the Battle of Verneuil.
Despite the challenges created by his brother Gloucester’s interference in France & declining relations with Philip of Burgundy, Bedford managed to hold the line & stem French resurgence. He secured Henry VI’s coronation as King of France in December 1431. He also left a lasting legacy by founding the University of Caen in 1432.
Bedford’s death at Rouen in 1435 left a leadership vacuum. The young King Henry who was now 13 might have been expected to grow into filling this gap, especially as he had other capable men to support him - his uncle Gloucester, great-uncle Bishop Beaufort & his guardian Richard Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick. But this never happened. The historian John Watts in his book Henry VI & the Politics of Kingship has traced in detail how Henry never fully assumed his responsibilities as an adult ruler with disastrous consequences for both England’s possessions in France & ultimately Henry’s own position as King of England.
Bedford married twice, but had no legitimate offspring. He married his second wife Jacquetta of Luxembourg in 1433 when she was 17 & he was 43. After Bedford’s death, Jacquetta shocked the English establishment by marrying Sir Richard Woodville, a man far below her in status. Their daughter Elizabeth would later capture the heart of the first Yorkist King #EdwardIV who wed her in secret in 1464, with long term consequences which continued to play out after Edward’s own death in 1483.

OTD in 1409 - death of Isabella de Valois, 2nd wife of #RichardII. Isabella almost became Queen of England twice as the wife of two different men, when #HenryIV, the Lancastrian King who replaced Richard, attempted to remarry her to his son (later #HenryV.)
Isabella married Richard II in Paris on 31 October 1396, when she was aged only 6 & he was 29. Although the marriage was arranged to establish peace between England & France, Isabella was an odd choice for Richard, a widower without an heir. Canonical law stipulated that the marriage could not be consummated until the bride reached her twelfth birthday. Nonetheless Isabella impressed the English envoys by telling them she was happy to be Queen of England as it would make her a great lady. Her dolls were included as part of her wedding trousseau.
Richard seems to have treated Isabella as the daughter he never had & a close bond of affection developed between them. The little Queen was given her own court & governess at Windsor Castle, made a Lady of the Garter & crowned in 1397. Richard visited her regularly & showered her with gifts & toys.
After Richard’s deposition in 1399 & murder in 1400, the new King Henry IV tried to marry Isabella to his heir who was close in age to her (only a 3 year gap) but Isabella refused & went into mourning for her deceased husband. On 21 July 1401 Henry relented & allowed her to return to France with her jewels & personal possessions. However, he kept her dowry, even though this should have been returned following the non-consummation of her marriage.
In 1406 Henry tried again to negotiate a marriage between Isabella & his son, & again was refused. On 29 June 1406 Isabella married her cousin Charles of Orleans instead, but sadly died in childbirth with their only child Joan of Valois when she was aged only 19 on 13 September 1409.
Henry V would go on to marry Isabella’s younger sister Catherine de Valois in 1420 & through her be recognised as Dauphin of France. Their infant son #HenryVI became King of England & France in 1422 on the deaths of both Henry & Charles VI (Isabella & Catherine’s father.)
