Today marks a deeply sorrowful milestone of 2 years and 2 months since the unjust closure of Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG). This organization, which has tirelessly fought for the rights and freedoms of LGBTQI individuals since 2007, was shut down based on false accusations by the Uganda Registration Services Bureau @URSBHQ They claimed that SMUG was recruiting young children into homosexuality, producing pornography, and paying individuals to promote homosexuality. These accusations are not only baseless but also deeply hurtful. The closure of SMUG has left a gaping void in our community. For years, SMUG provided a safe haven, a voice, and a beacon of hope for many who faced discrimination and violence simply for being who they are. Without SMUG, many LGBTQI individuals in Uganda are left vulnerable, without support, and without a platform to fight for their rights. This unjust action by the @URSBHQ has not only silenced an important organization but has also sent a chilling message to all LGBTQI individuals in Uganda: that their lives and rights are not valued.
