“Food is crowded.” True. But crowded doesn’t mean capped. This comes up often in investor conversations. Here’s how I think about the Indian food opportunity 1. 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐬𝐢𝐳𝐞 India’s packaged food market is $120B today and projected to reach $250B by 2035. Few consumer categories offer this kind of scale and growth. 2. 𝐍𝐨 𝐝𝐨𝐮𝐛𝐭, 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚’𝐬 𝐛𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐅𝐌𝐂𝐆 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲: 𝐀𝐦𝐮𝐥 ~₹60,000 crore in annual revenue. And yet, even the largest food brand still has single-digit market share. Food is not winner-takes-all. 3. 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 Food consumption is shaped by: •Regional and cultural taste palettes •Habit and frequency •Multiple formats and price points This makes food one of the hardest categories to scale nationally — and also the hardest to monopolise. 4. 𝐀 20% 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 If just 20% of packaged food shifts to better-for-you formulations over the next 10 years, that alone creates a → $50B market 5. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 $50𝐁 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭? That supports ~20–25 new age brands at ₹5,000 crore+ scale - without requiring dominance. 6. 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 & 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 Personal and skin care is $25–30B today, heading toward $70B+ by 2035, and has produced dozens of scaled brands despite being crowded. Food is more frequent, more habitual, and more essential. It deserves the same long-term lens. 7. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲 Food is crowded because demand is massive. Healthy food is hard because execution matters. And large, fragmented categories undergoing a structural shift are exactly where multiple enduring companies get built. Always open to debating this — with data.
