If your obedience is what keeps you saved, then Christ's work wasn't truly finished. If Christ's work is finished, then our confidence rests in Him, not in our performance. Does that mean Christians don't obey? Of course not. The question isn't whether Christians obey. The question is why. Do we obey to maintain our salvation, or because Christ has already secured it? Jesus didn't say, "It is almost finished." He said, "It is finished." (John 19:30) His perfect life, sacrificial death, and victorious resurrection accomplished what we never could. We don't add to His work, we rest in it. That's why obedience is the fruit of salvation, not the foundation of it. We don't work for God's acceptance. We obey because, in Christ, we have already been accepted.
